Bilstein 6112

Ok so they say it can lift up to 1.5” in the rear. If that won’t level it out what would be a good recommendation to do that? Suspension really confuses me because of all the components. Just an FYI, I have an 18’ TRD-offroad. Just haven’t changed my info yet

 

It is understandable, there are a lot of people who are just starting out that just want to do it right the first time. Think of it like this. The spring provides the lift, the shock or strut provides the comfort. In the front, the 6112 shock is a 60mm piston strut that provides the cushioning surrounded by a 600 or 650lb spring that provides the lift depending on how it is compressed (what clip it is set at). In the rear, the leaf spring provides the lift and the 5160 is shock /strut that provides the up and down cushioning. For more lift in the rear, you can do 2 things. If you have a newer OEM leaf pack, which you do if you have a 2018, you can go with a Add-A-Leaf or go with a full new leaf pack like a Old Man Emu DAKAR Medium leaf pack. If you only want about a 1.5 inch lift in the rear, I would recommend a Headstrong AAL. It would complement your 5160 on your offroad and is more economical for your situation. If you had an older truck, with a worn out leaf spring, I would recommend replacing the whole leaf pack for something new. Hope this helps.

 

thank you, I think that explanation helped a bit. I will look into that. I guess I don’t understand why the 5160 ad says it will give 1.5” of lift if it won’t. Are they just saying the shock can handle a 1.5 if applied? It’s the “trail kit” from rogue off-road. There seems to be some other parts but they don’t describe them in the details of the item. Anyways, thanks for the info!

 

Yes, the 5160 has the additional travel to work with a 1.5” lift. To get that lift you’ll need new springs, add an additional leaf, re-arch the springs, or add a block to the rear.

Yes, that is exactly what it means. I would even state that it could handle up to 2 more inches if lift on a 16+ taco. Your truck, from the factory, comes with a factory rake. The kit that you were looking at is more of a leveling kit (raise the front but not the rear) but on the 6/5 setting, your front would be higher. The 5160's compliment the 6112's with their valving thats why they put together. If you look at this package ( https://www.rogue-offroad.com/product-p/tacostage3.htm ) it is $200 more but comes with an icon AAL and longer u-bolts for when you add the AAL. This would compliment your 6/5 setting in the front.

 

Ok great, maybe I should’ve gone with that kit instead. But i can purchase separately if need be. I do have 2 more quick questions if you guys don’t mind. About what size tire will I be able to fit with the highest setting of the 6112/5160’s? And let’s say later down the line I want to go higher, will I be able to lift the truck even more with the same shocks or would I need to purchase new ones?

 

Just keep in mind, that the higher you go, the more money you will need to keep it going smoothly. First off, start with an aftermarket UCA, I have JBA and love them. Some have SPC for the caster settings but you will really need a alignment guy who knows what he is doing. Assuming you have a 16 inch rim due to having an trd offroad, the most comfortable size is a 265/75R16 (32 inch tire) but some have put on a 285/75R16. (33 inch tire). The bigger the tire, the more weight on each corner and more inertia is needed to push the truck. Less gas mileage and more hunting for gears. Not to mention a chance for rubbing the cab mount or fenders. Anything bigger you are looking at a regear and a heck of a lot more cutting and gusseting. Also keep in mind that each tire is going to be a different rating (SL, C or E rated) and a different weight per tire depending upon the maker.

 

Have you considered running air bags in the back? I tow a trailer sometimes, and it is nice being able to adjust the ride height as needed.

I'm not challenging anyone, but think this might be of help to someone out there. I recently bought a 2010 TRD Sport with stock suspension, 110k and a 200lb Pro-Top shell. Loaded for camping is probably another ~200.

I go off road at a reasonable pace, RR tracks, speed bumps, like everyone else and the suspension has never bottomed out - not once - after 6,000 miles.

 

I took the overload out.

 

Has anyone ran this suspension with Falken Wildpeak 275/70/r17? If so, what notch did you go with and how do you like this setup? Any pics?

 

Did this lift end up settling to 2” in the front?

 

I'm on 275/70/17 KO2's, you can run it at the 3rd notch up front to level it out if you're not lifting the rear. I ran it like that for a couple months, now I've raised the front to the 5th notch with dakar leafs in the rear.
