I was doing 100kms/hour at impact but the air bags did not deploy and the ABS didn’t stop the tires from locking up when I stomped on the binders. I managed to escape injury and the elk just ran away. Now I wait to see from insurance if they fix it or write it off. Anybody else have a similar event happen and was it fixed or written off?

    sorry for Ur misfortune

id be concerned the Air Bags didnt work ?!?!?!?!?!?1

at 100 kms/hr aint likely the nxt time they will work

U need to impress that upon the INSURANCE man

no room for assumptions or speculation on AIR BAGS

i can lock tyres on mine

really depends on how abrupt the pedal is stomped

thing is the back wants to come around..........nothing but air back there anyway

so even tho we ALL are at the mercy of panic stops

i try to be very firm/deliberate

    THE ELK RAN AWAY. Jesus.

Glad you are ok. Since the airbags are intact I'd bet they wanna fix that, plus it looks like the impact was contained in the crush zone - A pillar/windshield area looks good and both doors look normal.

Keep us posted and good luck

I am sorry that happened. Since you are writing to us and posting photos, it looks like your Tacoma did its job very well. I expect it will be repaired, repainted, and returned to you.

The passenger door opens about 12” and that’s it and the instrument panel says “the hood is a jar” LOL, I know what a jar looks like and it ain’t that!!
I’ve done a fair bit of mods to it since I got it in 17. Sure hope the adjuster takes all that in consideration when he’s assessing the value.

I hit a giant buck in a '77 280z once, it only left a small dent, and a lot of hair on my hood.

    OUCH!!!
That is fixable. Looks like the frame is fine and it's mostly cooling system/grill and sheet metal. $12K to repair I'd bet. Bags aren't blown because the hit was above the bumper and didn't decelerate quick enough.

Maybe gather receipts for your mods to give a copy to adjuster. Tough man but at least you’re ok!

    Damn. Glad you are okay.

The air bag deployment sensors are in the bumper. Bumper doesn't look like it hit much.... probably just the legs and the elk rolled into your grill/hood.

There’s a lot of good spirit on this forum and the support goes a long way to help deal with today, getting a replacement vehicle to get me To the impound lock up and get my stuff and go back home. One of my calls was to TOYOTA ECP for accident vehicle support and after they identified me and my file they said I didn’t qualify for the support vehicle. I said ‘I paid for the platinum 200k warranty‘ and pulled out the ECP card and read it to her. She put me on hold and came back to say oh ya I can get a vehicle. I also have a replacement vehicle with my insurance so no worries there.

Dang that's a heavy impact, I'd be really surprised if the insurance wanted to fix that. Let us know what they say

Looks like the elk met more than the grill. Sorry for this accident and the inconvenience you will experience. And, though there is no doubt it is fixable, I wouldn't think the Tacoma would ever be the same, nor would an insurance company want to repair it. My 2¢ isn't even worth that much though. So, share your progress.

my friend who wrecked his 2008 with 152k miles pre-runner The insurance didn’t total it gave him a check for the repair & bought my 2009 Tacoma with 41k miles sold his truck with clean title for $5,000 no airbags deployed as well so it depends on frame damage & the insurance company & amount of damage & what the Tacoma is worth

I grew up driving the east koots and hitting an elk is high on my list of things I never want to experience.
