so starter started acting up again. Worked fine for a day. Gonna replace contacts and plunger all together with rebuild kit. If that don't work then just gonna buy a new one.

I just got my CPS replaced via Toyota pushing it down to the dealer (large recall for 16/17 near the same mileage) but i may yank the starter too this coming weekend. Decently priced to replace the entire unit around $140

Edit: Well, online OEM replacement sent to me

I had a stumble to start. Did my regular checks battery, fuses, ect.

Got the truck to turn over had a CEL and TRAC light on. Plugged in my OBD reader and came up with a faulty CPS.

Took it in got it replaced. The tech wanted to keep it through tomorrow (day 5 I forgot how much I hate dealers) because he stated "it was a hard start after replacing the CPS"

I agreed it is a concern. However I need my vehicle tomorrow. So yeah long story short may yank er this weekend and see if i need a new one

The water probably go you too.... @Gilmorec61 said a bunch of trucks had issues on his last trip. Dang sorry man. Its most likely the issue. Mine hard starts first crank and then turns fine after that. I think the colder weather contributes to the issue.

Yeah i ran into a thread where a guy who was running a 2nd gen had the issue twice then once already with a third gen. Adamant on saying the water is murder on starters. Eh it is what it is. Ill take a shit starter as the worst thing to happen

Yea they arent that much. OEM like $140-$150 bucks. You can get a shitty AutoZone for like $40 lol. So far ive spent $15 bucks on a rebuild kit so if that dont work ill just buy a new OEM. Damn this last wheeling trip already costed me $about $330 if i have to buy a new starter. You pay to play though :p

Where'd you find a rebuild kit?

Unfortunately the starter is one of those things that did NOT carry over from the 2nd gen. Trying to find a rebuild kit is tough. Like you said 140ish for OEM is surprisingly cheap in comparison so most other things.

Also since I'll be up inside ill look for whatever connectors I missed with dielectric grease to try and get ahead of future water issues

When you say CPS, do you mean Camshaft Position Sensor? Did it get damaged at Coppinger?

Its weird because mine will have a hard click when you turn it the first time then delay slow start. Then immediately after that you crank it again over and over no issue what so ever.

Thats how i know its the starter

Water is definitely a killer for starter. Especially muddy water. Killed 3 starters in my old cj7 due to muffing and submerging too long.
