Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out if the dealership screwed me on my headlights. I bought a 2020 TRD off road a couple weeks ago, the dealer ad showed the truck was optioned with the LED headlights, DRL, and LED fog lights which I believe should look like the ones in the first picture. My truck showed up with halogen fogs and the headlights in the second picture, it looks like the dealer installed these LED H11s that have zero markings on them at all (if they were factory I would think they would have some kind of branding or PN) I'm thinking the dealer is pricing trucks as though they have the newer style headlights in them but actually ordering the standard ones and just putting cheapo H11 LEDs in.
    What do you guys think?

Yep, those are not tacoma led headlights. I dont think any company uses those bulbs for led headlights.

You still took ownership after you saw that? I would have demanded any deposit put down unless they get the correct optioned truck. Need to see what your deal sheet.

The factory window sticker doesn't say anything about the LED headlights and Fogs, so the truck was built correctly and the dealer promptly took their ad down that said it was equipped with the LED stuff.
Guess I was too excited about my new truck to even think I would have to run the VIN. Unfortunately I put a deposit on the truck while it was still in transit from the factory, so the dealer pretty much had me by the balls at that point anyway. My dumbass didn't even notice the headlights till I took the truck out on vacation the next week.

My window sticker did not indicate that the truck had LED headlights but as I was looking at the “maintenance history” from the Toyota Connect app I saw a ticket that said they installed LED headlights. After investigating I noticed they installed the Morimoto LED replacement bulbs. I think they work great and was happy they did that!!39838D1D-FC28-454E-A7BB-8E24F2A28648.jpg

Edit - Also from Colorado Springs which may be a coincidence or a conspiracy!!

So im going to say this though, I would rather have the projector housing than the real LED headlights. If and when the factory LED has a chip failure, you need to buy a new headlight. With the projector, you can just replace the bulb. You also get more options when it comes to bulbs. You can go HID, LED, halogen, you can put in yellow bulbs if you really want to... cant do that with the OEM led headlights.

Unless u have paperwork showing what u ordered . Your pretty much SOL . I would talk to the dealership sales manager to address the issue they might make it right . Going over there and yelling at Them is not going to make things right for you. If you talk to them like a normal person you should get positive results .

Are those cheap LED Replacement bulbs legal for onroad use, or would they technically be breaking the law for not having correct cutoff and such, as the housing is not made for that LED bulb. I would think the dealer might have some responsibility here if you wanted to push back on them installing these. Maybe even call up Toyota Corp with the issue and see if they have anything to say.

That's a good point on the LED housings!
I'm really kicking myself for not going over this truck more closely when I took delivery, normally I'm super thorough about stuff like this. I guess I got too excited to take my new truck on vacation.

I, myself, am looking to drop in some yellow HIDs after using 6000k HIDs, want the yellow for the snow in the upcoming winter. And, I agree. I prefer an HID conversion in a projector housing over an LED factory setup any day of the week.

That said, this dealer definitely did some shady $#!^ intentionally. I can almost guarantee it's on the up and up, technically, but still shady. Not worth the time to go raise a stink, what are they going to do? Basically tell you that they have your money, you have the truck as detailed, and go pound sand. Would still be pissed if I wanted LED light setup and the dealer pulled this one on me though.

@DeeKay20 you have a few options. One is to go to the dealer and talk to them, chances are (as I said) though that they know what they did and why they did it and will give you no such help.

    1. Check your local laws. Check them ASAP, those lights might not be legal! :) If they are illegal, go raise a stink about how you have illegal lights sold by the dealer. THAT will raise some heads. But if they ARE legal, you don't really have a leg to stand on. :(

    2. Use 'em. They're probably decent enough lights.

    3. Replace them with an HID setup, LED in projector housings is nonsense. HIDs are moderately better, still not as good as an OEM/Halogen setup though (technically). Amazon may or may not have conversion kits (ballasts and bulbs) depending on what the current loophole/workaround is for HID conversions.

Edit to add: Go enjoy the truck. A bad buying experience/being hosed by the dealer ruins the joy of a new vehicle quickly. Your dealer is the problem, not Toyota. The tacoma is still a great truck, you still have a good vehicle and spent a long time choosing it. You can go enjoy it now, the headlights are a small part of a major assembly that is your vehicle. Enjoy it.

Do you still have a copy of the ad or can you get a copy? If so go back to the dealer and nicely but firmly explain that what they sold you was not what they advertised. Tell them they should make it right and switch out the lights for the ones advertised. You just spent a load of $$$ and they should make it right. They know if
they don’t they lose you as a repeat customer and they lose some potential customers that you bad mouth them to.
I sincerely doubt that dealer is switching out headlights for something cheaper. I don’t see the financial incentive. Trying to make a couple extra bucks by switching lights makes no sense. Switching headlights is chump change for a dealer. Also if the window sticker doesn’t show the upgraded lights you are just stuck with what you got. I imagine those lights come with a package. If you didn’t get the package you are screwed.
If you don’t have the ad can’t get it, then you are out of luck, just deal with it. Just be happy that you have a new 2020 Off Road.

Those lights are illegal in a halogen projector housing. The dealer illegally modified your vehicle. If CO has state inspections you most likely won't pass.

The whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. I found an 8" scratch in the glass on the passenger front window the day after I picked the truck up, the dealer basically said because I didn't notice the scratch when I picked it up that they can't do anything, the HVAC mode knob doesn't do anything, air blows out of all the vents no matter what the it's set at. And the transmission sounds like the flywheel is going to fall out when I'm rolling in neutral or with the clutch in.
For those who are curious, I paid $37442 before fees, handling etc. The spec sheet shows option "LF" LED Daytime Running Lights and Fog Lights, I guess I could have misread the original ad if it was worded the same as the spec sheet but I'm pretty positive it said LED headlights,DRL and fogs. And still find it odd that the dealer put the LED H11s which isn't mentioned on any of the financial paperwork and no work orders in the Toyota connect app. I've tried dealing with the sales guy and I've been trying to get a hold of the sales manager. If I don't get anywhere with the sales manage/dealer, I'll try Toyota's regional office and then if I have to I'll get a hold of national.

All that said, the truck is a ton of fun off road and I do really like it, just worried I might have bought a lemon. :notsure:

The HVAC knob doesn’t do anything when you turn it? This dealer sounds so sketchy. It sounds like they had you signed sealed delivered long before the truck was even PDI’d.
