I was actually helping an HS friend recently with a plan to open up a coffee shop. He wants to open one somewhere semi-remote, I suggested near the Zion area. I was trying to help him work out financials to see if he could do it and find out some info about how well it would work in the area.

He's not one to stick to a plan though. But having been out there, it's definitely an area for potential.

I want to explore the Canyonlands more. Not sure where it was we camped the final night, but it was either in Canyonlands or on the outskirts of it. Beautiful views.

    Let's do it.

A big Midwest meet up would be pretty neat one day

    I'm very down for this.

Need some coordinators for each region of the Midwest and a good time/place.

They're decent for the price but there are far far better motorcycles out there. The engine is underpowered, the brakes suck, and the factory suspension is pretty soft. I did a 685 kit, a new seat and a nice suspension on mine and it really was fun to ride - rode it on several very long trips quite happily. The reason its in the back of the truck though is it started making horrible noises deep in the engine, in the middle of nowhere Canada on the way back from Alaska. Now its in pieces... Made it about 51,000 mi or so, not great, but for a big single, not horrible? I dunno. I'm not even sure whats wrong with it, the engine is sitting on my workbench, was running, noisily, before i pulled it. Not sure its worth fixing really.

If I had to do it again, I'd save up and get something nicer. I got mine in grad school, so cheap was a priority For other candidates, I rode a guy's Husky 701 and it was better in every way, but those are basically a KTM so then you're at a different level of complexity and possibly expense. I'd probably look at a F800gs too. The 1200's are just..enormous.

Depending on the previous owner, I'd say you bought a decent bike if you got a deal on it. They definitely aren't top shelf bikes, but parts are readily available and they're easy to work on. Not to mention you can find parts bikes for super cheap. If you decide to get rid of it, depending on how bad the motor is, I might be interested.

Yeah that looks a bit like the edge of Canyonlands. It gets a lot bigger feeling when you're in it:

Yeah I'd rock a yamaha for sure. I ran into a guy with one of the small tenere's and he loved it. Not available in the US though :(

I just like keeping things light, thats pretty much my only beef with the big bikes.

I can imagine. This is Lockhart Basin before we "illegally" entered parts of the Canyonlands on the trail. (Per the trail edition guide book)

Yeah there is that. All depends on your priorities. I think I want something with a bit better build quality. Someone once told me the klr engine case is made of compressed bubblegum wrappers - which doesn't seem too far off once you'ves managed to strip any bolt on it.

In addition to the ones above, I'd be checking out Yamaha and Honda too, particularly the tenere line and the africa twins.
