Best corded drill?

im looking for a corded drill(i want to keep it forever and i know these never lose power. my grandpa has a craftsmen that is from like 1980 and it still works like brand new.) and i also want a drill that has a keyed chuck, all for less than 100 bucks. i saw this one

what do you think? also do i need a keyed chuck? last time i used an adjustable one it wouldnt hold the bit in place when i was drilling some steel.when the keyed chuck went right thru it

Go with Milwaukee/Makita/Craftsman/Dewalt. I wouldn't go with a Black and Decker as they aren't the best quality, but I guess if you aren't doing much with it it could work out for you.

milwaukee is definitely better quality then the black and decker.

you get what you pay for so shell out a lil more now and it will last longer

I'd go with a big name. I prefer makita, but dewalt is my 2nd choice. I've broke my share of black and decker and craftsman powertools. Don't bother with the no names, they aren't worth the hassle.

i have an older dewalt corded/keyed 3/8ths chuck.....works superbly, even after all the use it has endured. brushes in it are still in good shape.

This is the corded drill I have , Dewalt pistol style with a 1/2 " chuck so we can get long auger bits in it , as well as a handle so you don't rip your arm out of it's socket when it binds .

Excellent drill for this price range , variable speed and reversable , I would buy another , but the one I have won't die .

Found this link on the US home Depot site , so the price is probably accurate for you .

i have the milwaulkee one you posted the link for. Got it on sale for $89 about 3-4years ago. doesnt show any signs of quiting and will twist your arm outa yer socket if it catches... i love it... but i use it for heavy duty stuff... you might be better off getting something smaller.

Milwaukee will destroy you before you destroy it. I have several and never had a problem and I'm not exactly easy on them. I run auger bits on them and big hole saws. If it fits in the chuck it's put to use.

I have managed to burn a few Makita's out though running hole saws. The switches also screw up eventually. Some people like them but me personally I do not. They just screw up to easy and usually not worth fixing.

i had my miwaulkee cordless on a roof drilling into a chimney for a chimney topper/ spark arrestor. dropped the drill straight off the roof "about 4 stories to the peak"

luckily it landed on the drill broke the bit and the battery went flying off of it but nothing broke on the drill and still workd fine...

my brother in law dropped my makita cordless about 3 stories on its side on pavement. cracked the plastic but still works no problem...

i also used my Milwaukee drill the 1/4" angle iron for my rear bumper, went through 3 batteries and the drill got so hot the air coming out burned my hand... still works like a charm.

makita, milwaulkee cant go wrong. both have stood up to way more abuse than my dewaults

dewault is a better quality (glorified) black and decker.

I like the Milwaukee Hole Hawg myself

You can't go wrong with Milwaukee tools for sure , I was just giving a review of one of the drills I own and is used by me and my crew daily .

ive used a half inch makita corded drill with a keyed chuck, and it handled anything big or small. i broke the bit before i broke anything else. i like a nice heavy one. i think i will wait til after christmas or something to get a good deal on the milwaukee

Maybe you people have read this before , it' hilarious but oh so true....:

>The Hole Hawg is a drill made by the Milwaukee Tool Company. If you look in a typical hardware store you may find smaller Milwaukee drills but not the Hole Hawg, which is too powerful and too expensive for homeowners. The Hole Hawg does not have the pistol-like design of a cheap homeowner's drill. It is a cube of solid metal with a handle sticking out of one face and a chuck mounted in another. The cube contains a disconcertingly potent electric motor.

You can hold the handle and operate the trigger with your index finger, but unless you are exceptionally strong you cannot control the weight of the Hole Hawg with one hand; it is a two-hander all the way.

In order to fight off the counter-torque of the Hole Hawg you use a separate handle (provided), which you screw into one side of the iron cube or the other depending on whether you are using your left or right hand to operate the trigger. This handle is not a sleek, ergonomically designed item as it would be in a homeowner's drill. It is simply a foot-long chunk of regular galvanized pipe, threaded on one end, with a black rubber handle on the other. If you lose it, you just go to the local plumbing supply store and buy another chunk of pipe.

During the Eighties I did some construction work. One day, another worker leaned a ladder against the outside of the building that we were putting up, climbed up to the second-story level, and used the Hole Hawg to drill a hole through the exterior wall.

At some point, the drill bit caught in the wall. The Hole Hawg, following its one and only imperative, kept going. It spun the worker's body arond like a rag doll, causing him to knock his own ladder down.

Fortunately he kept his grip on the Hole Hawg, which remained lodged in the wall, and he simply dangled from it and shouted for help until someone came along and reinstated the ladder.

I myself used a Hole Hawg to drill many holes through studs, which it did as a blender chops cabbage. I also used it to cut a few six-inch-diameter holes through an old lath-and-plaster ceiling. I chucked in a new hole saw, went up to the second story, reached down between the newly installed floor joists, and began to cut through the first-floor ceiling below.

Where my homeowner's drill had labored and whined to spin the huge bit around, and had stalled at the slightest obstruction, the Hole Hawg rotated with the stupid consistency of a spinning planet. When the hole saw seized up, the Hole Hawg spun itself and me around, and crushed one of my hands between the steel pipe handle and a joist, producing a few lacerations, each surrounded by a wide corona of deeply bruised flesh. It also bent the hole saw itself, though not so badly that I couldn't use it. After a few such run-ins, when I got ready to use the Hole Hawg my heart actually began to pound with atavistic terror.

But I never blamed the Hole Hawg; I blamed myself.
The Hole Hawg is dangerous because it does exactly what you tell it to. It is not bound by the physical limitations that are inherent in a cheap drill, and neither is it limited by safety interlocks that might be built into a homeowner's product by a liability-conscious manufacturer. The danger lies not in the machine itself but in the user's failure to envision the full consequences of the instructions he gives to it.

A smaller tool is dangerous too, but for a completely different reason: it tries to do what you tell it to, and fails in some way that is unpredictable and almost always undesirable. But the Hole Hawg is like the genie of the ancient fairy tales, who carries out his master's instructions literally and precisely and with unlimited power, often with disastrous, unforeseen consequences.

EVERY hand tighten model I have used lost the abilty to stay tight. ended up using channel locks on each hand/finger piece to tighten them down.

Milwaukee is the way to go. I was a pipe fitter for four years and had the same drill the entire time. I drilled through cast iron pipe, cement walls, cement foundations and have never had a problem with mine. Just hold on tight and you'll be good to go.
