3rd Gen Magnuson Supercharger Review & Discussion

Maybe so, depending on your definition of blast! Time will tell I guess. I've been wrong before and will damn sure be wrong again! Ain't no shame in my game.

 

yeah Idk what people really expect from this when I hear they're disappointed with it, and I'm saddened to read those thoughts. A progressive build to 300 whp in a ~4250 lb truck isn't going to be all that impressive acceleration wise (at least compared to other stuff I've owned/driven.. ymmv), and I really don't expect it to. But it should feel pretty quick in 1st and 2nd, and still have noticeable pickup in all gears. Plus that rock solid reliability, true bolt on installation, and blower whine.

Only thing I was on the fence about is whether it would be noticeable from that 2500-3500 rpm range. Sounds like it's an improvement.

If people want all 300 whp at 2k rpms and enough power to light up the tires from a roll... then sure... slap on an OV twin kit. Have fun reversing that to stock with no evidence of modification, dealing with leaks in the ic piping, calculated load control (esp when towing), etc. I had enough issues with a bigger than stock turbo on my Mazdaspeed3. Oil drain leak, turbo coolant feed hose leak (kinked a line during install and that in turn cracked the hose), boost creep from too small of a wastegate, cracked wg cap causing boost creep again after a few months, high boost air temps leading to not insignificant amounts of knock. Constant monitoring of all boost lines, constant monitoring of parameters like KR, AFR, Boost, Fuel Trims, Boost air temp, Calc. Load, etc. Took the fun out of enjoying the car. I'm sure a small batch twin turbo kit on a motor not designed for turbos from the factory is going to present similar, if not more issues.

I'm even happier with mine after a week than I was on the first day after installation... Tune seems to have settled in a bit. The shifting still isn't as good as OVT 2.0. But i'm learning to drive to optimize the shifting still.

But the power is there! Both taking off in city traffic and on the highway the truck is infinitely more responsive than it was stock and is actually able to use 5th and 6th gears and not be screaming at 3.5k rpm going 70mph.

MPG seems to be pretty much the same as stock when driving "normally." I haven't done a highway trip yet to see what that will yield but am debating taking my truck to Colorado this weekend instead of my car just to see how it performs on the highway for a long trip.

 

If you come to Denver/Golden let me know. I'd like to inspect. Drive safe cause there are many dumbass drivers here.

 

same for me! It feels great after almost a week. I’m starting to drive normally again and I can really feel the power when I’m being lazy and not shifting out overdrive to pass. I’m accelerating from stop lights much faster, but my city mpg is up to 16 now. I’m usually about 14.8 mpg in the city. I’m curious how it will be on a long highway trip.

it’s nice to have the same power as a 5.7 Tundra with much less weight

 

The system is growing on me. It performs well under full throttle. For me it drives very stock under normal conditions, then when I floor it I really feel the difference. Light throttle input has little impact. I would like the system more if it had more impact with less throttle input. Driving URD’s setup had me very jealous of their instant throttle response. I am averaging 17-18mpg on 33”s driving normally and opening it up from time to time.

 

I have a question on the Flash Tool.
Does the Flash Tool loads automatically when the Orange dongle is connected to the computer?
And how long it takes to flash?

 

There are instructions included in the kit on how to do the flash. A caveman could do it. You do have to email OVTUNE for the registry file and then magnuson to send you the actual tune. You will NEED the white sheets of paper that have serial numbers taped to your boxes. So don’t throw those away. Send your emails out a couple days before you want to install.

No you need to download the VF Tuner software, get the tune from Magnuson, then do the flash. The actual flash takes about a minute.

 

Just the serial numbers? I’m getting mine installed in a couple weeks and I had to move the radiator and all of the small bits into a smaller box that will fit under my Diamondback cover. I’m trying to make sure they have everything they need when I drop it off. I’m opting to have someone install it so I can maintain drivetrain warranty.

I got the Reg file and the flash file. I started the process a few days ago.

The question was more in terms of the steps when connecting the dongle.
I guess I can start the flash program and then connect the dongle. Or vice versa.

I believe that’s how Magnuson designed the charger so that you’re not in boost at light throttle for fuel efficiency. Watching my boost gauge, in normal driving I’m rarely in boost. At WOT I saw as high as 7.4psi.

 

Just curious, have you or anyone done a proper 0-60 test? It should be fairly accurate unless you are like a mile above sea level lol.

Everything that I have seen points to the acceleration not having dropped below 7 secs and the Tundra I drove for a month can do it un 6.5-6.7 secs

I would love to have Tundra power in the Taco, since it weights less it should theoretically be even faster but nothing that I have seen so far puts it ahead of even a stock DC Tundra despite the weight difference

Hoping OV or someone sells a great tune for it or might just eventually get a Tundra.

Can't beat the V8 sound, the handling and driving was surprisingly fun for a big truck and gas expenses would come out to about the same but I just really like the Taco too

 

Why are people saying the Tacoma with the blower has Tundra power? It doesn't.....
I'm sure the charger is awesome though, I am debating getting one.

 

Because it does.
Here is Stock (and TRD exhaust) 5.7L Tundra peak HP is just below 300.

Magnuson Tacoma makes about 308HP at the wheels according to Bascoma, and the dyno chart posted a few posts up

also here’s a second source to confirm that tundra’s make about 290-310HP which is the same as a magnuson Taco
