    Hey All,

My husband has a 2018 taco trd pro, pretty much all stock. I am going to surprise him with a new set of tires and am looking to get 17s instead of what it came with 16s. Can we use the existing TRD rims or will I need to get different ones?

You need new wheels. 17s are 1.0in larger in diameter and will not fit on the stock wheels.

The new 2021 4Runner Pro wheels would do the trick.

Otherwise, consider 265/75R16 tires. Lot's of great AT choices in that size and just a bit bigger than stock.

    Welcome to TW
New 17 inch rims are needed to run 17 inch tires.

Welcome to TW. You may have luck looking on Facebook Marketplace for Tacoma or 4 Runner rims. I was on there the other day browsing through and there are A TON of folks selling stock oem rims (with tires sometimes) because they recently upgraded their own. Very reasonably priced too.

    2. Are you sure your husband wants 17's? He might be happier simply with a slightly larger or more aggressive tire.
    3. Is there a particular set of code words or phrases where I can plant this idea into my own wife's head?
Agreed 100% - unless he also wants new wheels, just get the slightly larger tire.
Yep - and if he doesn't like them, I'm sure we'll find someone to take them off of your hands.

I'm just thankful that I get very little push back on my end of the mod purchases.

Same here but there are a lot of eye rolls and looks (rightfully so) like I'm a 5yo asking for a toy...

Be coy and do some digging on your end for what he likes

See what he is looking at for wheels and tires

Maybe he likes the stock wheels but wants different tires (good option as you already have wheels)

See if he likes the OEM style like the 17" pro. Maybe he likes aftermarket like procomp or methods. Or everyone like scs'

    Nice gesture......... seriously.

The best way to avoid a serious mistake like you were about to make is to get him a gift certificate and let him pick his own.

    A few.
The tires that came on your husbands truck are size 265/70/16. You can go up 1 size to a 265/75/16 size tires and still use the same wheels.

IMO you are wasting money buying new wheels unless you just hate the wheels that came on the truck. The overall diameter, height, and width can be the same with 15", 16", 17", 18" or even 20" wheels. The only difference is the size of the hole in the middle of the tire.

If the truck has 16" wheels a 265/75/16 is as big as you can go without modifying the truck. A 265/70/17 will for all practical purposes be the same overall size. There may be a tiny fraction of an inch difference somewhere, but you'd need some pretty accurate measuring tools to find it.
