    It should help, yes.
Have you tried just leaving it in 4th gear while towing?

Don’t get confused with the gear giving you MORE towing capacity.

Yes, it will make a huge different.. you will notice it night and day. The questions is :
1 - How much you are towing, boat, gear, etc..?
2 - How heavy is you rig? (Armor, steel bumper, winch???)
3 - How often do you tow?

4.30 will make a huge different over stock gear, but i will recommend you go 4.56 or 4.88 if you are heavy.

Anyone know the difference between Standard Thickness Front Gearset and “Thick” Front Gearset from nitro?

You towing in 4th gear, if not you should be. Regear will definitely be noticeable though, probably equivalent to 4th gear

Well, than i recommend 4.56... since you have stock tire size. It will give you better mpg, and lower rpm than 4.88. You will be happier doing those uphill climb pulling that boat along...
Note: nothing is wrong going 4.30, and it will improve from stock gear... Just remember as everyone stated " Tow in 4th gear"

The thick gearset is for 3.73 and down carrier thin is for either 3.73 and up or it might be even 4.10... either way you’ll need thick unless you’re putting a locker in or something

Watch the nitro gear video on YouTube where they regear a stock taco to 4.88 and the guy says it feels much better than stock

I think its a 3rd gen tacoma in that video. 4.88 may be a bit too much for a 2nd gen.

    My $0.02.

I would love to have 4.30, but with my truck I would need to also purchase a new carrier for those gears to fit, adding cost. I'm not positive if that is only due to me having the TRD OR with the Locker, or not. So you might be OK, depending on your current differentials.

I also doubt you want to go any further than 4.30 if you don't plan on putting on larger tires or added weight. My truck is a fat pig (over 6000lbs) running on OEM sized tires and I regularly tow over 4000lbs on the stock 3.73, and it gets the job done. I just keep going back and forth between 4.30 and 4.56 for my situation.

I pulled these screengrabs below from the grimm jeeper calculator. You can see the different RPMs you'd be pulling at 55/65/75mph in each gear. And remember, as mentioned above, you should never tow in 5th, but instead shift into 4th to keep it from kicking into and out of Overdrive. Going 4.56 or 4.88 would just hurt your mileage excessively when you aren't towing.

The shop by my house said they can do the regear and the total labor cost will be 800 to 900 dollars.. Is that a fair price?

Sounds fair if it’s for BOTH gear sets.
