I'm actually tempted to lease one of those as a grocery getter. Why lease--because I've heard too many oil burning and gasket issues with the Subaru and this will ensure I get a new car every 3 years.

 

We bought an Outback in 2011 I think, car has been great for us, and I would buy again, except we got a good deal on a 4Runner

 

My Tacoma takes 5w-30 and the Tundra takes 8qts of 0w-20 lol

 

See I hear a lot of people complain about the CVT. Drones too much or too muck lag? Thought about getting one in a couple years once I pay off the truck as more of daily driver. Only modification I'd probably make to it is better tires. At the same time, to your point, feel like they're underpowered for the engine platform they use. Not saying I want the 300+hp a WRX can put out but at least a little something...I hope I'd at least have the desire to do maintenance on it

 

I have 3 vehicles now... I have a 2013 Mazda CX-5 sport AWD gets about 27mpg average and does really well in the snow, the daughter has inherited this, I have owned it since 15miles on the odometer... it takes 0w-20, the 2016 Tacoma OR DCSB I bought in 2018 used with 20k miles on it, it takes 0w-20, My wifes new-er car is a 2017 4runner sr5 bought it with 37k miles on it, it takes 0-w20 as well...

so I might as well buy some stock in

0w-20 oil, I only use Mobil 1 or Royal Purple.. When I worked at a small euro shop we learned that a lot of manufacturers such as BMW, VW, AUDI actually preferred/altered their recommendations to swap from 5w-30/5w-20 to a 0w-20 oil, as they had become more readily available, and more commonplace.

 

subaru's are ok tow work on until the rust bug hits them hard... subframes, exhaust, and LCA's rusting out.... the rear knuckle lower bolt on some models/years is a bitch to remove... certain aspects of the subarus designs to not make them a NE vehicle... but they do very well in the snow.... my mother has a 2011 subaru legacy sedan.. it is fairly comfortable although slightly stiff suspension, the transmission is just not to my tastes... in my opinions all CVT's are junk.. they do well for fuel mileage, but the driving experience is garbage (even with the "sport mode" & steering wheel paddle shifters), I would take a manual 6 speed any day..

 

Honestly at this point this is about the only Subie I'd consider purchasing with my own money.



My mom has driven Subaru's since 1989 (red Loyale wagon) and that was the last one that didn't get early-onset cancer. But I'd love an old 80's 4x4!

 

Wife's camry has one. It's a hybrid. Want to tow, race? Nah. But, for a daily driver mobile A to B machine....works good enough, gets it to 150k and then whatever happens....happens.

I had a 2.5L "sport" trim Mazda 3, that thing was fun without being deadly. I regret trading it in when I got the Tacoma, I should have just kept it as a second vehicle.

BUT if it's just a grocery getter, and you have a truck, I'd say go all in on MPG - plug in hybrid

The new hatchback corollas catch my eye every time I see one, might pick one up as a second vehicle in a few years time.

Wife '15 camry hybrid, uses 0W-20 AND the same filter! Last time I did an oil change I just did them together, hopefully that schedule holds up, I should do one in a few months before the winter and hope to ride it out. We live in RI....I have a few months with less than 1k miles.

 

That is the only crappy part about the tacoma 3.5vs the 4.0 4runner... the oil filters are different!! GAHHHH!! hopefully the drain plug copper washers are similar.... I can just buy a baggie of them..

 

Yeah this car (whatever my 2nd car/small SUV) is it's purely for good gas mileage and comfort. Not looking for speed and towing by any means but want AWD. The hardest use it would get is lugging around my kayak(s). I think whatever I go with is definitely going to be an extended test drive if I can get one and will plan to probably undercoat it from day 1.

 

Long term I think my plan for the tacoma is the attempt to keep it til self implosion and try and pass it down to the first kid I have as a pure beater. Second/third vehicles will likely be more practical

 

Wife has a Crosstrek...We had a forrester with a gasket issue...The have redesigned/resolved the issue since like 2017ish....

 

I wouldn't mind having a BRAT, since my grandfather owned 2 of them (a '79 and a '84). I will see if I can find the picture/manual, but one of his BRATs is on the cover of the instruction manual from PathFinder plows (he helped design the plow mount for Subaru's).

 

My dad had one when I was a kid. Lots of fun with those jump seats; we used it as a field bomber for a little while until the rust got too bad.

 

My family has had 11 Subarus. Only 1 has had engine issues - 2009 Forester that my nephew ran completely out of oil. All of the rest have been or are fine. Wife’s current ride is a 2010 Forester XT. Goes good, plenty of zip, and with Hawk brakes stops on a dime with change left over.

 

I have only seen pictures of my grandfather's BRAT, since the first one rotted away to nothing, and the second was sold just as I was born. I don't think he ever kept the jump seats in his, he just used them as a small, fuel efficient pickup, though I would love to ride around in the back now!

 

The Brat with the Two back seats was to try to get it into the USA as a car and avoid the chicken tax on Japanese Trucks.

 

So. I need new tires. I have quotes from Hot Rock (firestone), the Winged Sneaker and TFT.
All are 265/70/17 for my 2017.

The new Toyo AT III look pretty damn nice. They are the most aggressive of the above. Do any of the others have severe snow rating? I know the Toyo's do.
