Damn, you can't even buy a 2WD Tacoma in Canada in any trim. Mind blown 2wd is offered in Off Road trim in USA!

I find that just weird. Why not get a Sport if you don’t want 4wd? Does a 2wd off-road have a locking rear differential? Seems unlikely since on a 4wd the locker can only be engaged in 4lo. With no 4wd, no low range, and no locker, why is it called “off-road”? What’s the functional difference between it and a SR5 or Sport?

Yes they have the rear locker. Engagement is limited by speed for them I believe. But they do have one

Oh shit. That’s bad. Are you on 35’s. When I have my RTT on I’m getting about 280 before my gas light comes on. Without it, I usually get about 300 miles. When I was completely stock I could pretty regularly get to 400 miles.

Not to start a :crapstorm: war but there is little difference between the OR and Sport 4x4 :D

Anyone who thinks a 2WD OR is pointless has never driven fast in the desert (or doesn't live in the southwest).

Just go with 4x4 if available. Its always better to have something that you don't need, rather than wish, or need, something that you don't have.

2X2 Means 2 wheels and 2 wheel drive. Yes they make such a thing.

    th (1).jpg

4X2 means 4 wheels and 2 wheel drive.

4X4 means 4 wheels and 4 wheel drive

    A 2X4 is normally a stick of building lumber. Actual size is 1 1/2" X 3 1/2".

I've found no downside to just buying a 4X4. The initial cost is a little more, but resale value down the road is better too. A fellow could spend a lifetime driving 4X4 trucks and once you get past the initial investment spend no more money than the guy who spends a lifetime owning 4X2 trucks.

With skill and careful driving you can take a 4X2 into some surprising places. But at the end of the day there are going to always be places where a 4X4 will go with ease and a 4X2 can't come close. Having 4X4 will also allow you to get into many places where a 4X2 could go, but it's going to put a lot more stress and wear on the 4X2 to get there.

I don’t know if you are just trolling or not. The primary functional differences between the Sport and the OR are the rear locker, ATRAC, and tires.

This and I don't off road my 4x4 but did have to embarrassingly; in my 2015- 2 wheel drive sport taco had to get pulled up a boat ramp by a Jeep of all things :) that was too slick for my rear wheel drive alone to pull my boat out at low tide and second time was on the beach which yes, we can drive on in Daytona; while making a u turn got into the deep stuff and beach patrol with a Tacoma, but 4x4 had to pull me out as onlookers said "why don't you use your 4 wheel drive? is it broke" insert sigh as I traded next month for a 4 wheel drive 2018. It wasn't technique, it was situation, both times.

Sounds like it was a bad technique to put yourself in those situations... :D ...but whatever you think, dude.

Once you buy the truck, youll want to take it to rougher places. The 2x4 is capable, but not as capable as a 4x4. I was recently in a weird situation where i had to go over a sidewalk without being able to roll in to it. 2x4 just started spinning. Popped it in to 4x4 and it was like going over a small speed bump. Any offroading you should go 4x4, and trust me youll want to offroad
