Here's a trick I learned from my dad years ago. Take an old conveyor and pull a couple rollers out of it and wire brush, sand, and paint rims. It allows you to roll it for a good even coat and the only thing messed up is the edge but 99% of the time the tire covers that anyway.

I had to buy 2 new rear rims for one of our 140's. Both of our 140's had one good wheel and one bad one. I saved this good one and only wanted to paint the inside to stop the rust before I mount the tire on it and leave the original finish on the outside to match the other one on the tractor.

Found this linear cylinder I forgot I had. Gonna try it on my vacuum system on my mower for the dump. The handle is on the left side and my left shoulder is bad. I have to turn and use two hands to open and close it.

So the threads don’t strip out of the aluminum?

I don’t know that I could see them being that small

Theyre bigger than you think. 2-56 .129 helicoil install, drill size of .093" @ .400" deep for good measure lol

And yes so the threads don't strip, its a fixture plate for a part I'll be making tomorrow

I just said that just in case anyone didn’t know why you put helicoils in aluminum, we do the same thing :D

For some reason they don't do it initially at the shop I'm at, then when I pull 3 threads out within the first 5 parts after I reset up the fixture it takes time to drill out the holes, tap, and install the helicoils

Most of the time the person making the fixture and using it knows what to do to begin with to make it work and last longer.

Yes, but doing a lot of 30-40 parts and then doing it again (with setup scrap), they get tired. Or you could do what I did today and look at the wrong setup sheet and not add .091 to the Z work offset lol

I guess I'm gonna have to be the one who asks; whats a helicoil? You guys stated its purpose but what is it made of, etc if you don't mind

It's a wire spiral/spring that can be screwed into a hole that has had the threads messed up.

Basically, if the threads get messed up, you drill the hole out slightly oversized to fit the helicoil. Then tap the hole to fit the outside of the helicoil. The inside of the helicoil then is the size that your original hole was.

Dean gave a great description of what they are, here’s a picture of a kit.

A friend of mine goes to goodwill everyday. He texts me pictures every now and then and ask me if I want this or that. He found this for $3.99, I said get it!!!!

One thing I learned about helicoils fairly recently on a project I was designing is that they not only are used to fix threads, or make the threaded area stronger in aluminum, but they also increase the strength of the fastener itself.
The helicoil acts as floating thread filler in between the threads of the hole and the threads of a bolt. Since there are different tolerances in the threads of bolts due to manufacturing differences, and thread grades, there is often slop in between the treads when a bolt is installed. This means that a lot of the pulling force of a bolt is isolated on just a few small contact points of the threads, and can cause stress to failure. When using a helicoil, it is a forgiving “floating” buffer or filler that helps spread the pulling force of threads more evenly onto the mating threads.
Sorry for the rambling, just thought when I learned this that it was cool because it acted as tolerance filler in the variances of the threads!
