As I recall, there was an uproar about closing one of the local ones that housed the MEDEVAC unit. Come to think of it, I'm starting to wonder why MEDEVAC is run by MSP as opposed to EMS?

 

I think it’s due to the multi natured role of those helicopters and the program. They do much more than medivac. They also do search and rescue, hoist operations, homeland security missions and other public flight operations. They don’t, or at least when I was working on them, would not transport officials.

 

I guess you're right about that. I figured they would be tasked out for policing missions and SAR ops, but I hadn't figured on DHS operations. That said, besides the DHS missions, I feel like the rest of those tasks would also fall under EMS purview, right?

 

A good friend of mine works on Trooper 2 (out of Andrew’s AFB) as a paramedic and this was the chopper that was slated to be closed.

Let me clarify some stuff for you. They fly with 2 pilots and 2 paramedics, the paramedics and pilots are also uniformed state troopers who still go through the same police academy and have patrol cars for when the weather is bad or their aircraft is down for maintenance. The Pilots are mostly ex military pilots who just got a post military gig for another pension and great benefits..They also do a lot more than just fly your broken ass to shock trauma when you really f*ck up. Lol. They Participate in search and rescue operations, missing vessels, missing persons, hoist operations, high speed chases etc. etc.

They turn a 30 minute ambulance ride into a 5 minute ride especially when time is of the essence and you needed to be in a trauma center ASAP. (They only mainly fly priority 1 patients most of the time) and they do this for free. Your cars registration renewal pays for their services and program. As opposed to a private EMS helicopter ride (Life line, Med Star, AMR, Etc) who will easily slap you with a $200k bill for a 10 Minute helicopter ride...

 

That makes a lot more sense. I did not realize funding was preallocated and that flights were basically free for victims. That's pretty cool!
