I am living this decision right now. I took an F150 Super crew 2.7 ecoboost home for a weekend. Great truck, very roomy, the HP and torques was amazing. I loved the truck. Our desire might be similar to yours, camping on some weekends with a rooftop tent, and maybe a small <2K lbs trailer. I did not like the Chevy. The interior was not up to the Ford nor the Tacoma. The price was very similar with the F150 and Tacoma. The Tacoma is slow and a little noisier compared the F150. However, the F150 does not fit in my garage, and the reliability of the F150 is suspect. Many get good ones, many don't. The Tacoma will run forever with proper maintenance. I have had several. If I truly needed a larger truck, the F150 or Tundra would be best. Then there is the resale. Tacoma is OK to buy new with minimal and linear depreciation over time. The F150 you will lose much more of the value because there are so many sold and their reliability is worse than the Tacoma.

I just ordered a 2021 Tacoma TRD OFDC. I spent the last 3 months test driving each truck. I plow with Chevy's 2500HD trucks...Tacoma can't do that type of work...but it is reliable, fits on trails way better, and works good enough as an all around truck.

That's so crazy to me, when I go on trips, I am always consistently in the 21-23mpg range. I dont think I've ever been much higher than that though. I've never gotten sub 20 unless I was idling the truck for extended periods or on short trips to the store.

If you are comfortable with handling a full-size and you dont mind heaving it around town, get a full size.

The only reasons why I ditched my Ram and got a tacoma are:
    A) it fits in the garage,

    B) its more pleasurable to drive around town. I'm handling a light truck that can take corners. The steering gives me response and feedback. The Ram felt like I was tacking a 30 foot cabin cruiser. It turned, but it did so without joy. Full size trucks just have no soul. They dont make me smile. They aren't fun or challenging or engaging. They have all the personality of a minivan that popped some steroids and now it thinks its the neighborhood badass.

    C) The smaller the truck, the better it does off road.

But if those things dont mesh with your lifestyle, get the more capable full size.

As far as real poor fuel economy with the tacoma towing...i haven't seen that, but then again i only tow a 2k lb boat mostly on good highways with not too many uphill grades. It still beats my v8 tundra by over 4 mpg's towing the same roads.

But the 10 speed broke the goodness that the 5.0 had to offer so ide get the 3.5.

I liked the Fords more than expected. If the F150 had offered a manual transmission with the 5.0 I'd probably be driving one right now. I'd just make it work in the garage. Until then, Tacoma fits just right.

If it’s anything to you I’ve never been much of a fan of my 3rd gen. Just always felt like something lacked. Probably about to trade in on a STX with a 5.0

Don’t they have a major recall on faulty springs in the heads?

Not sure what you’re talking about. I don’t have one so I don’t follow Chevy recalls but given the pushrod design it would be quick work to replace valve springs

A random d00d on the internet can’t answer that question for you without a lot more information about your lifestyle, personality, intended use, living location, etc.

IMHO, If you can’t camp with a single backpack, you are not camping.

    It's a secret
    My $0.04 drop...

Purchase a Taco. It will take a beating and run much longer than those other guys... It's kinda why you see them used a lot buy the not-so-friendly insurgent/rebellion types in those counties with ongoing civil wars...

Lease those other guys. Sure the U.S. uses them for secret service and other government vehicles, but they get replaced and rebuilt and replaced again every few years... 36months of somewhat worry free use before shit begins to breakdown on it, then lease another one...

Keep in mind all vehicles are consumer products and not true investments...they will eventually die.

Forgot where I heard that, might not have been true. Heard that the springs were bad on all the recent GM V8

Have you tried a Double Cab Tundra?

I used to think the same about the boring and soul-less handling of full size trucks but a DC Tundra actually handled just as good if not better than the Taco and was fun to take around the corners or from a stop when turning due to the increased power.

I do hear that the crewmax feels heavier and not as fun, wonder if that applies to the crew cab version of the other full sizes..

Won't argue with this at all... I grew up camping with just a single backpack and would laugh at those who brought as much as I do now. My biggest reason for "more shit" now though is truly just for the luxury/hell of it of it. Kayaks and bikes take up space, and hell, I even have taken a pellet pizza oven with me recently for shits and giggles.
