Rear frame reinforcement, what are the options?

Typically people use 1.75” diameter x .120” round tube (roughly schedule 40 but it’s a standard hrew / dom size or some roughly 2.5” x .250 wall square or rectangular tubing but even a bigger bumper that ties the frame together in the rear helps and might be easier.

When I repaired the rear section of my frame, I replaced the spare carrier with a home-made one, and welded some angle iron across the top of the fuel tank cross member. Cut a hole through the new frame section and slid a piece of thick walled 2"x 2" tubing through. I welded it later, after these pics. Made a frame to stabilize the tire to prevent swinging.

Mainly, I did these steps due to rust on the original parts, but they definitely are stronger than OEM. As seen below, the spare carrier had multiple holes rusted through it. I don't really "off-road" (by TW definition) the truck, other than a little Southern Indiana mud occasionally, so not sure if this idea helps you.

 

I have a class IV hitch, it’s for my double axle trailer,

But I would think a class IV or V tow hitch would be worth the money and the frame brackets.
Would one need anything more than that?
Probably not unless you boxed the frame

Just out of curiosity, are these kits only made so you don't have to take all the supports off of the inside frame in order to box-in the frame? Wouldn't that be stronger, to box-in the frame?

 

it depends just why you need or think your frame needs more support.

 

It will be stronger if you box in the C channel frame and plate the outers.

 

Pretty much. There is a bunch of crap on the inside that would be a pain to work around, and then you’re also creating more places for corrosion to hide that way. Doing it on the outside is easier and strong enough, if it needs to be stronger it might be easier to just build a new rear frame from scratch.
