I've seen a few threads about this issue but didn't see any solid conclusions as to what is happening here so I wanted to try and see if anyone had any ideas.

It seems that this is a normal occurrence with the new 6 speed manual Tacomas where the transmission has a loud metal on metal clanking sound when riding over bumps in neutral. It happens whether you are coasting in neutral out of gear and if you are in gear with the clutch pedal pressed in. It's quite annoying when you are driving on slow residential or city streets & hopefully there is a solution to this as it seems weird Toyota let this be a normal part of a vehicle in 2020.

Let me know your thoughts and below is a video for reference!

I get some metallic clatter like that, I kind of assumed it was the “skid” plate (super thin, little clearance). Interested in learning more, or if there’s an easy fix.

Sounds normal for the MTs. I also get a lot motion out of the stick moving all around in there. It's a pretty violent experience :D:thumbsup:

It can be obnoxiously loud in the cab too. I’m not the most experienced MT driver having learned at 23 with a jeep and selling only two years later.

I bought my MT Tacoma two months ago and noticed how loud, clunky, and grungy it can be. I blamed it on my inexperience.

Not the skid plate but it would be nice if it was because that would be an easy fix theoretically.

I certainly get a lot of motion out of the stick as well but that happens over bumps whether I am in gear or in neutral & it is certainly quite violent.

Very loud in the cab as well & I've had two instances where it was tricky to get the truck back into gear while whatever is banging around down there seemed to be hauling my shifting a bit. Would not blame it on your experience or lack there of as you say, this transmission clearly has an issue with something banging around all day long in city driving.

Happens with my truck as well. I've been driving manuals my entire life and just figured it was just a quirk of the vehicle.

try hitting a pothole with the clutch pressed... you may think you left a piece of the tranny on the road... anyhow, I still like my unrefined MT...

That is the conclusion I am coming to as I've never heard any manuals I've driven in the past do this whether it was two or four wheels.

Living 10 miles from NYC I have rolled into my fare share of craters in our earth but likewise the truck is still great.

I will see about strapping a GoPro under the truck tomorrow and look for suspicious movement. My best guess is the yolk in the diff or tailshaft has a little too much clearance.

What trim levels do you guys have? I wonder if it could be specific to certain models. Ex: TRD OR could have the issue because of the locking diff

That's a great idea I may do the same & that is what I read on another post that it may be diff or driveshaft related but no further conclusions were made after that, maybe we can be the saviors of future 6-speed tacoma owners!

Here's to hoping I guess. I really hope it isn't a manufacturing defect, I haven't even cracked 1k miles yet so I would be really disappointed in Toyota if they let something that major slip by.

It’s totally 100 percent normal. Don’t worry one second over this.
I’ve been driving manuals my whole life. Racing and wrenching.
Aluminum housing makes sound resonate. It’s a truck not a luxury car.
