Fair point - I have a degree in mechanical engineering and experience wrenching. Not trying to be braggy about it, just giving context. I did a radiator on my old jeep and the dude at the inspection place told me "holy crap, that's not an easy job!" ... took me an hour and a few bolts. :notsure:

If you're at a Toyota dealership doing the work, I'd use the TQ wrench because that's probably in the maintenance SOPs, you're doing warranty work per Toyota directions. But in my driveway...I use a harbor freight ratchet :drunk:

    Ha, same!

Just for whoever is skimming this thread: Using the 27mm is peace of mind for me. I can use this thing on 3 of my vehicles so it puts in a lot of work... yes, it's a forged aluminum piece, that's still quite a bit of stress on the 3/8" slot.

I bought the motiveX filter wrench. I can't say from use but it looks to be of good quality. I also don't mind paying for a good tool that I will use for the 10 years or more I plan to own the truck. I planned to do 5000 mile oil changes and do them all myself once the 2 "free" ones are used up.
The motiveX was the most recommended one here and best reviewed one one Amazon. I do have a torque wrench from harbor freight I had for a few years so I'll be using it. After seeing the few one star reviews where the 3/8" drive on it got stripped out I did go get a 27mm socket to use to remove the filter. As of now I have no idea how tight it will be from factory or how tight the dealer will make it, so I'm ready. I didn't get the $60 kit just the cap wrench. the drain tool looks ok but I can most likely do fine with the thing that comes with every filter. The special funnel, well a funnel is a funnel in the end and I can get several plain ones for that price.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.

I agree that the auto manufacturers claim they're doing this for environmental reasons but I'm convinced it's just for costs and to dissuade some owners from doing their own oil changes (and perhaps some enviro virtue signaling.)

I end up with oil in the gravel driveway every time regardless of my careful attempts and job specific tools... I don't think the environment is overly stoked about the extra oil being pissed out on the ground. There's now a plastic drain nipple, 2 O-rings and a paper filter.. so what they're saving is the metal canister (the metal part that's easily recycled.) It works fine if you don't have a service center over-torque either of the two threaded areas that sit BELOW the engine oil level.. but it sucks.

Oil breakdown is a myth. It’s all a scam, wake up! Took dinosaurs 7 million years to make that oil, no chance in hell our best technology breaks it down in 7k miles.

Good point, oil doesn't really break down as much as it gets contaminated with exhaust, gas, dirt, etc. Some long haul truckers install massive remote oil filters (down to a few microns filtration) and run their oil for 50k+ miles.

Yes it will take the plastic ones off it applies no more force than need to unscrew any cartridge. My V6 has a standard metal filter but I have used the tool on plastic stuff too. The beauty off the tool it well remove filters that has been put on by gorilla with a breaker bar the tighter it is the greater the gripping force

MotivX for me. It works really well for the 3 or 4 oil changes I've done so far.
