Agreed and you have a sport as well? It would be quite unfortunate if it wasn't caught especially after the 4 years that this transmission has been in the truck.

Definitely not a luxury car, was just wondering if there was a way to eliminate or help quite down the amount of clanking that is going on down there but if not then I'll just have to straight pipe it to override the noise, no big deal.

No I have an OR, but hearing that you have the issue with a sport means that the locker isnt the issue.

That's what I figured as well, I'll probably still strap up the old GoPro though. Who knows, might see something cool :D

I have one of these transmissions apart right now.... looking to see if anything jumps out as the cause. My best guess at this point, pertains to something in the synchronizer blocker rings, and where they interface with the hubs and sleeves.

We say it's not a luxury car transmission, which is fair enough. However, a variant of it has been used in the Porsche 911... can't imagine a noise like that in one of those.

Could it be too large a tolerance on the tail shaft splines and the rear drive shaft? It kinda sounds like something isn't meshed quite right and it is bouncing back and forth when not under load.

I have the same experience with my Sport...it's actually embarrassing when going over speed bumps, sounds like my truck is falling apart. :(

It would be quite shocking if Porsche allowed their units to have this symptom but I am quite curious to hear if you are able to find anything as it sounds interesting, also subbed to your build thread!

Coasting in neutral is against the law in California.

Happens while in gear with the clutch pushed in as well.

My 2017 has done this since day one, and it still bugs me today.

Since it sounded like the same noise I heard while stationary and slapping the shifter back and forth, I crawled underneath and had my wife slap the shifter around.

I agree with @Jowett. It is definitely coming from inside the transmission. Sucks, but it is normal in the sense that we cannot easily eliminate the noise.

Mine does exactly same thing since new, its normal. I did think it was my hitch at first though haha. None of my other vehicles did that. I would not worry about it.

The sound is coming from the tranny due to play. Rear diff has nothing to do with it.

Hmmm... That noise does not sound 'Normal' as in Ok for quality control purposes... It sounds like sheet metal, rather than sodil metal, or a casting - materials which should be more closely associated with a transmission - vs sheet metal...

I do not have a Tacoma MT yet, but here is a silly question - but how do you know it is coming from the transmission?
Are there any MT Tacoma owners out there who DO NOT have this symptom?

Quite a while back; I had a VW that made that almost identical sound when going over bumps - while in neutral / or with clutch depressed but out of gear... (As is often the case when going over bumps...). It drove me absolutely MAD as I could not locate the source looking under the car and jiggling stuff. It never made the noise at any other time... (or so it seemed)...

WHAT WAS IT? You ask... Well, as it turned out; this was not possible to detect while the car was stationary as the noise resulted from suspension movement and stretching of the exhaust hangers. I do not recall how I found out, but I do remember the case well...
On a bump, the suspension would compress as the car went over the bump, while the exhaust hanger would stretch and then sling back against some of the underside of the car. The vibrating exhaust made it sound as a clatter rather than a single clunk... I doubled a couple of the exhaust hanger rubbers and that took care of the problem by reducing the stretch of the exhaust hangers and changing the frequency and amplitude of the exhaust bounce...

It seemed that this was in fact also happening at other speeds on certain high-er speed suspension compressions - however, this was inaudible over the wind / air noises present at high speeds. I know this because the top of the exhaust had some fresh scratching to a degree that would not be explained solely by the occasional low-speed instances which I did notice...

I am in no way saying this is the case in this instance with the Tacoma (I am not close to the issue at this time...). But I think it is a great idea to try and film (as mentioned above) what is going on in the underside before reaching a conclusion - AND calling it normal...

Man, this is 100% normal with all 3rd gen MT tacos. Absolutely nothing to worry about. Every single one 3rd gen MT does that.

Same thing with my 6spd Frontier Pro-4x, I've assumed it to be gear backlash.

The truck is tight and quiet overall so it's noticeable. That said, I'll only hear it if I'm between gears and hit some jarring bumps like pot holes or train tracks.

Is it the clutch friction plate bouncing around? I just converted my truck to manual (5 speed 4cyl though) and I think I may have heard the same thing. It seems intermittent and I haven't been swapped long enough to have pin pointed the condition that causes it.

I get some various clunking and other noises when I feel I am not driving smooth enough, or with the clutch in over big bumps, but not exactly that more tinny sort of noise that I hear in that video. Or is the microphone not picking the sound up exactly right? 2018 6MT Sport here.
