My 2nd gen tacoma V6 Auto trans comes with Limited-Slip differentials, do I really need an ELocker?

Is that somewhere around 11-12 mpg? that is pretty crappy mileage, i can see why you ditched the blower. This makes me feel better about my 4 banger lol. Im getting 16mpgs with full aluminum skids, 5.29 gears, steel sliders and front bumper, and a camper shell.

Only if you feel like what you've got isnt doing the job. Do you drive off road much? I would go with a Detroit true-trac if you drive on the street mainly but are looking for an upgrade over your stock LSD

I think i fill up around 17 gallons, so that sounds about right.

With the supercharger it was the same.. except premium gas

I mainly drive on the street but also would like to take off road once in a while. so I would like to know if LSD is comparable to ELocker in a similar way with off-roading?

Short answer is no, a locker will be much better for off-roading, but then you have some downfalls with driving those on the roads. For example a lunchbox type locker doesn't like you on the gas while turning on pavement. If you go the ARB locker route, then you're back to having an open diff when the locker isn't engaged.

I have heard of some folks using the e-brake in tandem with their LSD to help off road, but at the end of the day, if you need a locker to get over an obstacle, a LSD probably won't get you where you need to be, or it'll be much more difficult.

That factory posi is prob spent. A Detroit trutrac would do you good.

So with the lunchbox locker and other types of locker (except ARB locker) have the gas issue while turning on pavement? When you say ARB locker is not engaged, with open diff meaning the factory diff limited-slip will be activated?

The factory traction control is always on unless you manually disable it or are in 4lo. With an ARB locker, you remove the factory positrac carrier and replace it with the arb, and when not engaged, yes, it is an open diff.

This sums it up pretty much^^

If you have the true factory LSD that came on the 05-08 sports, then yes this will be replaced by the ARB carrier. If you have the Auto-LSD (brake actuated LSD) which came standard on non-Off road trucks starting in 2009, then you would still have that when the ARB isnt engaged.

I have the base model so not sure if it's a true factory LSD or not. Ive requested from a toyota part dept to print out the build sheet, and it shows as LSD only.

Base model sr5, you prob don't have a mechanical LSD. It's prob electronic using the brake system of you model year has that.

Hey team, I've just read through all the posts and I couldn't find any opinions that fit my setup (even though we're all 2nd gens, it seems that there are multiple factors when deciding on the best ratio). First, to my setup: 09 DCSB, 6 speed MT, 4WD, supercharged. I have steel armor all around- front & rear bumper w/ tire carrier, winch, sliders, bash plates to the transfer case, camper shell, two-drawer system and 33 in tires (skinny). That's my daily weight; when going on trips I obviously add the camping gear weight for three (plus 75lb dog), a fridge and a big ass tent (shiftpod, aka 'space yurt', it's awesome). I think that's it for relevant data for this conversation....

I am currently at stock gears (3.73), and while it does feel a little sluggish off the line (especially when in camping trip mode), the supercharger takes care of most of my power needs; however I'm getting ready to stuff some 35 x 10.5 x 17 tires and through my research thought that 4.56 would fit the bill. However, after reading all of your very informative thoughts on the matter, I'm not quite sure anymore. If nothing else, I'm thinking that maybe the 4.88s may be in order. I like the tall and skinny tire for both aesthetics and performance (that's a totally different debate for another thread) and don't plan on going any higher in tire size than mentioned above. I mostly use this as my daily driver, but have also been building it for touring/overlanding purposes for all terrains (even though I mostly drive in the CO mountain trails). I'd say that my wheeling usage is fairly in the 'moderate' category (I now have a crawler project for the really tough stuff), although I have taken this thing on the Eagle Rock trail outside of Colorado Springs (for the non-locals, this is a fairly difficult and technical trail, and I scared myself a few times).

Now that I've shared my life story with everyone, what are your thoughts? Am I probably good with 4.56, or should I bump it to 4.88?

BTW, I can't believe the OP sold his truck; I think he made the right decision given his needs, but it was a shock to my frontal cortex. I guess I assume the folks on here just don't ever contemplate selling their Toyota, rather, they just figure out innovative ways to make turn this pig into a beauty queen....:woot:

I ultimately followed the advice of the pros at ECGS. At 5200 pounds the 4.88’s made a huge difference even with the supercharger.

Yes, I sold it - my Taco let me down at the end. Given my needs, best decision of my life as much as I was a Toyota fan.

Well, I think you made a good choice, can't go wrong with the F-150. I took a hard look at one a while back, just couldn't just get away from the pull of my Taco. Plus, I was living in the Bay Area at the time (driving around San Francisco isn't fun in a full sized truck), and I don't pull trailers very often, so the choice was easier. Not that you need my endorsement, but your welcome back to the family anytime!!!

Thanks Brian. I haven't chatted with them yet, but I'm kinda thinking they'll tell me the same...
