I’ve loved my Duratracs and Dynapro MT in the snow but if you’re mainly driving on ice both of these are far too aggressive

The 3PMSF designation on its own is almost meaningless. The only test required to get it is an straight line acceleration test, and they only have to be 10% better than a reference all-season from the '90s.

Have had ko2s with snowflakes for years on the coast. I am inland now and had a few slides on ice last winter. Like to have 2 sets.

I run Hakka 9s, living in the rockies. But if you don't regularly see ice, a non-studded winter tire will stop shorter on snow/cold pavement.

The non studded version. Some provinces require winter tires (all seasons with snowflake rating will suffice for them), but not all provinces permit studded tires.

Can't use studded here in ON. Which Hakkas do you have?

Depends on your viewpoint. I can have two sets that each spend six months of the year on the truck and will last 4 years. Or I can buy a new set of all seasons every two years when the winter peak rating wears off. I realize storage space is a factor for some. Cost wise, for me, it's a wash.

I talked to an engineer at Transport Canada once. They test winter tires at a contracted facility in Minnesota (?) to make sure they are in compliance.

His advice, not speaking for the government, is buy the cheapest dedicated winter tires that bear the 3PMSF. But the large companies have more money for R&D.

Me, I run Blizzaks and have never looked back. If they help me avoid one single collision, they've paid for themselves. I also want to give my family the best chance.

A dedicated winter tire like a Blizzak will stop way better than the KO2s that technically bear the 3PMSF. A dedicated winter tire has a lot of siping, and the rubber doesn't get as hard as a hockey puck when it's -30 science degrees.

I'm not sure which they are. They're sitting in my garage in Calgary. I'm sitting at my house in Ontario. Any non studded Hakkapeliitta, or Nordman will be a better winter tires than a 4 season rated tire.
