Oh California how we love you and your laws,
The sound is significantly louder in person and it bounces off other vehicles as you pass by haha!

I had read a few posts on it pertaining to the driveshaft as well and completely agree that no matter how many conveniences they add to “pretty” the Tacoma up it is still at face value a raw pickup truck. That being said it still seems weird that Toyota would leave something so blatantly obvious after 20 years of manufacturing.

But regardless this all leads me to the question... was it performance reasons that allowed this to occur and if so what are the pros and cons or was it just a financial decision which is a whole separate argument.

Mine does the same. I’ve been driving manuals for over 20 years and I’ve never had a transmission this loud and clunky over bumps. I traded in a 2003 Ford F-150 that was super quiet over potholes with the clutch in. I assume it’s normal for Yota.

In fairness to the People's Republic of California, coasting in neutral is illegal in Georgia as well.

Yeah it seems to be normal at this point based on everyones experiences, just gotta live with it and as long as nothing breaks it's not that big of a deal.

2nd gen MT does the same thing. Try crawling up a rocky trail and depressing the clutch in a hurry. The blacklash is hilarious. Nothing wrong with it, just a big clunky, long trans on a baby mount.

I used to have a 2010 Nissan Frontier for a company truck with a manual trans that did the same thing.
Very noisy. When you were coasting it sounded like a bucket of bolts. It was sold with 170K and still original clutch and tranny. No issues at all 4.0 V6. Actually it was a really good truck I must say. Not quite a Tacoma but a good raw pickup truck.

I also believe it's the rear driveshaft clunking and clanking like that, and it's completely normal for these trucks.
16 OR did it from day one, 19 Sport as well.
Diff whine on both too, although the 19 is much more subdued.

It’s pretty bad on trail roads and it is tricky to stay in one gear on slower trails since 1st is so short and 2nd is slightly too tall.

So so true, but that 1st gear in 4lo with the diff lock turns these trucks into mountain goats!

The ratios chosen for the RC-62F are a head scratcher for sure. I'd also like closer ratios for that 1-2 shift, a slightly deeper OD for 6th (makes 5th more useful) and of course a lower reverse. Meh, tuning has made some of these shortcomings more tolerable.

When does the diff start to whine? Not sure I have noticed that yet, even though it doesn’t matter as long as it’s not mechanically an issue.

My tranny only clunks when im not perfect with my footwork. Its totally possible to drive buttery smooth about 95% of the time.

I could not agree more with all of that, you either ride the clutch in reverse or go full commitment to a 6mph parking job.
