Had my recall done today - dropped it off at 7:20am and it was done a little after 9am. That's where the good news ended.

Driving home with my wife on the freeway at about 70mph in the left lane, went to change lanes and the truck jerked to the side BAD. I knew what it was and was able to get off at the next ramp and pull into a parking lot. Yup - all of the lug nuts on the driver's rear were barely on the studs! Wheel was chewed up from riding up and down the hub. I jacked it up and tightened the lugs and immediately went back to the dealer. They apologized profusely and admitted it was their mistake and agreed to get me a new wheel.

That could have ended really badly. My wife was going to take the truck for errands after we got home.

Mine was completed yesterday, and I was at the dealership no more than about 2.5hrs.

Now I need to install a pre-ordered fuel tank skid but the vendor reported they are behind schedule for the fabrication. Seems to be a common theme with off road fabrication companies.

I just called my local dealership and the service rep claimed that it's mostly the 2019 models that have been affected by the recall. No idea if that's accurate but they said the recall didn't apply to my vehicle.

Mine is ordered. Here’s something that sucks: she said my truck is the first Tacoma they’ll have in for the replacement. Awesome, so I get to be the guinea pig. Maybe once it comes in, I’ll schedule the actual appointment for an additional week.

Doubt that, they've been replacing fuel pumps on other models for months. Not much different. It's finally the Tacoma's turn.

Doubt your truck will be a guinea pig. The dealerships have been replacing fuel pumps on Corollas and Highlanders already.

    Don't doubt it.

There's already been someone chime in from a dealership that says the Tacoma is a pain in the ass getting the filler neck lined back up, and they're gonna start pulling the beds instead of tanks. (someone was the guinea pig, obviously)

Another person has reported they fucked up something to do with his filler neck / gasket, and now those parts are on order and he still doesn't have his truck. (probably another guinea pig...)

And someone reported the R&R for the recall procedure is 1.6hrs. The SM confirmed this. My visit to the dealership was no more that 2.5hrs.

So now dealerships are going to start removing the beds for the recall according to you?

What in the fuck does that have to do with the fact that someone's truck might, or might not be some dealership's guinea pig?

Check out post #9356 by @MESO when he removed the LP fuel pump. He only had to lower the fuel tank.

Why would a dealership remove the fucking bed when the R&R time for the procedure is only 1.6hrs? Dealerships receive technical bulletins for step by step instructions for the recall issue. And they have already been performing this procedure on other models so I doubt the "guinea pig" claim.

You'd have to ask the dealer, but in answer to your question, yes, at least one dealer already early on in this is pulling beds. And yes, at least one person has already reported that the dealer admitted fucking up their shit in the attempted repair and is / was now waiting on parts to fix said mess.

All I'll say is that if you don't thing the dealer can fuck something up in an hour and a half, you've either been living a charmed life or haven't spent much time around the average service department.

Glad to hear yours went smooth and quickly. There are already other folks getting loaners for the day, and I'd bet my bottom dollar the average guy is going to be sitting in the lounge eating popcorn for at least 4 hours.

I've already been postponed once, as the dealer forgot to order my parts. Only being aware of the ever present lack of competence, and making a call to the dealer before heading in the morning of my appointment saved me a three hour round trip to nowhere.

    Again, congratulations. Seriously.

Have you seen a copy of those step by step instructions? No, of course you haven't, but I'll bet they have the "tech' dropping the tank, and not lowering it, as Meso did.

You're doing a great job dumbing down the forum without any help from me, my friend.

I'll chime in on this one finally. Had my 2019 Sport completed this morning. Dropped it off at 8:00 AM and was called around 11:30 AM where they said it was done and ready for pickup. I was offered a loaner vehicle for the day if I wanted it when I dropped it off.

Drove it a good half hour to 45 minutes afterwards without issue. Filled up the tank from a half tank level without issue as well.

My work was completed by a dealer other than the one I originally purchased from.

100% we are not removing beds. That's nuts.

Its 2 fuel lines, 2 evap lines, a fill neck and tank straps. Down.

I would never remove the tank halfway like that, too much strain on brittle plastic lines.
