Doing some work on a house that was built in 1776. I can't imagine these floors/perimeter patterns are original, but they seem quite old. Beautiful craftsmanship.

Indeed. The entire house (excluding kitchen & baths) has this flooring. It even continues up the stair treads & risers. There is a great room (I think it was once an attached barn) has wide pumpkin pine floors. One of the wider ones measured just over 20".

 

$309 later, new springs and cables.

 

Thanks, I have yet to see it in person. I know that pictures really accentuate how dark something is. This is only the stain, they still had to lay the three coats of poly.

 

Just to touch base - ended up returning the allure flooring and bought a different flooring. Picked up bags of Henry SLC and lath to put down in the low spots of the subfloor. Luan will go on top, then underlayment foam then flooring. Tackling this tomorrow and sunday so we shall see how it goes.

adding 2000+lbs of SLC for a 625sqft area really doesnt seem like the answer in this situation. ripping the subfloor and re-leveling would seem to be the appropriate thing to do otherwise but im no professional

I’ve built a couple hundred stairs but I’ve never stained/painted one.... there’s a good reason for that- two days to tape the damned thing (with plenty breaks to salvage my back)
Reveal will come tomorrow before installing the balusters and newel I prepainted. I’m a solid day behind a schedule I thought was fat

 

...^^^... Next week I am closing on a new home ... my first new home ever.

The stair steps to the second floor are clear oak and there are 15 of them in dark grey stain.

They are stained on top and the guys put it on too thick. I was charged $2,500 extra for clear oak treads ... seemed kinda high to me.

Later, I will post some pics and maybe get some advice on how to lighten them.

The painter PAINTED the stain on the treads and hand rails and never wiped it off .. then put a light clear coat on it to seal in his mistakes ..

Any suggestions on how to lighten the stain on the stair treads and oak hand rails ?? ... will post some pics later.

I hope I don't have to strip the oak.

I ordered some RamBoard stair protectors for move in to minimize stair damages.

PS ... Your staining job looks fantastic.

 

Before someone says something, those are not air bubbles on that tread. The poly didn't fill the entirety of the grain (surface tension?) on first coat, the second coat filled those and can't see now. I did find 3 bubbles/dust spec on the treads, I'm going to 220 sand and touch-up when I poly the handrail.

 

There is one step stain/poly, maybe used that?

 

Im guessing sand off and start over...?

tag it on final walk through for them to fix properly? at $2500 I'd be looking at it with a fine tooth comb...even if it meant a night or two in a hotel while it's fixed
