Hey guys, so I bought my tacoma used and it had an after market radio in it. About a year after driving the truck my radio sometimes turns off and then back on usually within the first 5 minutes of starting the truck, after 5 mins the radio seems to stay on fine. Anyone had a similar problem?

Pull the radio out and check all of the splices between the radio plug and the harness adapter if they used one. Make sure all the plugs are locked together.

I had one did something like that removed it checked the wiring connections several times .

Some sort of internal intermittent open circuit .

Just gave up put a used factory radio in so far so good.

Could be a fuse too. Sometimes if it’s loose it’ll cut out

Not like I have not been making electrical connections for 40 years.

Pull the radio out double check the power connections the first 2 times I redid the the input power and the ground connections .

While it would not power up I never lost the station presets

Mechanical connection and solder and heat shrink. The problem was intermittent might then work for days or weeks. then fail to power up. Do my normal errands start the truck it powered up and work to the next time.

Since I removed it put a factory radio in months ago no problems

I had an 09 that done the same thing, and now I have a 10 and it does too, both had/have factory radios though

Intermittent issues suck. If you can, set up some temporary lights at the fuses and at the radio so that when you lose the radio, you can see if power is there as well. One light on either side of the fuse and one at the power connection at the radio itself.

If you've got all the lights on when you lose the radio; I'd say the issue is in the radio.

Since you don't mention losing presets I am ignoring putting lights on that.

    Good luck.

Thanks man. Seems to be the radio, its giving me other weird issues too so i bought a used OEM radio to replace it with. I'm just gonna take it to my dealer to replace to get it replaced, previous owner made a mess with the wires behind the aftermarket radio.

Made a mess... As in cutting the connectors off the harness and splicing the new radio wires in?

Yeah, I took the radio out and the spliced wires and the adapter back there might be part of the problem. Wires spliced over and over and other wires left unconnected. I'm gonna see if I can connect this radio myself first but otherwise I'll let Toyota guys take care of it for me.

    Oof. That sucks.

I'd suggest, if the wires are long enough to still work with on both ends; to extend them 6" using some 16 gauge wire and red butt splice crimps.

Buy separate strippers and crimpers. The crimpers on the combo tool are usually in the handle side and make a thinner crimp than the stand alone crimper. You'll also get a tighter crimp with the crimp jaws on the other side of the pivot.

@Jimmyh might you be able to provide this fine gentleman ( tongue planted firmly in cheek, lol) the diagrams for the radio harness?

    just a few things.
i would look for a good audio shop. Im pretty sure the person that does audio and alarms at the dealer is contracted from an audio shop around that area.

Thanks @Larzzzz , I took out the adapter and the wires splicing the original wires out and made sure all my connections were good back there and just plugged the used factory radio in and it works fine now. Found out the backup camera actually worked this whole time but the previous radio didn't support it.
