First off I'm not new toyotas, currently have a '93 4x4 pickup 22re 296k mil, and a '83 fj60 216k mil. lots of old trucks in the past, but looking at getting into a 2ng gen tacoma access cab 4.0 4x4 for a work truck. Assuming the frame is solid and the motor dosen't rattle/tick like a bomb, what are things to look for and how high to too high of milage? Going to go look at one with 330k mil for a reasonable price! Thanks Neil

Just remember, there's always a few reasons why someone is selling a 330k mile truck for a reasonable price.

At 330k he doesn't have a very broad market.

It should be cheap, not reasonable.

With your experience with Toyota's, if 330k doesn't tell you everything you need to know, I doubt this thread can. The best I can tell you is "does it seem ragged-the-fuck-out?" when you look at it/test drive it.

The 1GR has solid bucket valve lifters and will tick/chatter like a diesel at times, and that's normal.

Engine mounts caved into the frame
    Head gasket leak (mostly 2005-2006s)
Steering rack leak (seepage near the tie rod bellows) (all years, still happening today on 3rd gens)
Timing cover leak (near the power steering pump)
    Rotted out radiator support bushings
    Worn out wheel bearings
    Coolant leak near the firewall
A/C leak at the high-pressure line going to the condenser
Squeaky clutch due to worn-out throwout bearing quill on the bellhousing (for MT)

For a work truck (i.e. downtime means lost business) I'd go with a new one.

NotUrTaco - The nearly 300k '93 is ragged the F out, looks it too, but i wouldn't hesitate to drive that thing anywhere. The tacoma looks way better.

3JOH22A - These are good points. looks like there are a few 2nd gens running around with high mileage, just wondering what normally kills them. I dont have the capital for a new truck and i can fix most anything, just looking for a better start. If it lasts another 100k before it needs a motor/ trans i figure it was money well spent.

    Thanks Neil

330k is nothing if you’ve owned the truck it’s entire life and know exactly how it’s been treated.

330k is bad bad bad if you’re buying it second hand cause you don’t know how it’s been treated it’s entire life

    that said, I’d offer $100

But couldn't we say that it lasted 330000 miles and still is running well that the owner was taking care of it?

I bought a 2.7 with 216k on it. I'm at 260 a year later. It needs a rebuild. Get a lower milage one unless you're ready for a rebuild soon

It's north of 500$ by a bit, probably more then i should pay, but i have a price in mind and don't need a truck yet!

rnish - thats a nice truck, but looks like you should have started with a trd. This one is not either so another price drop!

Tcomaboy - 330 is a lot, but ive never been a new truck guy, most ive had started with over 100k. Closer to the 200k mark. Im just curious about why everyone is scared of 250+

When/why? Do people give up on these trucks, what fails that people aren't willing to repair. The current driver is a little small, has just shy of 300k and knocks on start up/idle, but has for the last 50k! Thanks All

Because you don’t know how it’s been treated over such a large amount of miles. It seems like you already have you mind made up whether you’ll purchase it or not. Also you don’t seem to be sharing the price of the truck or what you’re willing to pay so it sounds like you may fear the responses you may get..... just some observations.

Since you are new to this website, I will tell you tacomaworld is not an echo chamber. This community gives you honest responses because no one has a hidden agenda, so you may not like the responses but they are genuine.

    Good luck.

I personally come from a family of volvo drivers. We didn't buy one unless it was 270k+

Id say but the truck. I didn't hesitate buying mine with 200k +. But I knew it'd need a motor rebuild. Unfortunately it was sooner than later.

My truck was a 2 owner truck. 1st guy owned it for a few months and traded it in. The next guy had it from a few months from new until he traded it in. I have dealership records for all maintenance and I found out he got the oil changed religiously at valvoline. And it still needs a rebuild at 260k

I just bought a 2005 f250 with 240,000 miles. Granted it’s a diesel, but that’s still a lot of miles on the body, frame, suspension, etc. Got it for a good price (in my opinion).
