My understanding of overlanding is it initially was about being able to live off road for an extended period of time relying on your vehicle, provisions, and skills. Then social media happened.

I've been wrong before, though

For 95% of people out there, it’s very expensive weekend car camping / glamping

the other 5%, it’s long term travel into remote areas (multi week / month)

the funny thing is from what I’ve seen, the more money people spend, the less they actually use it and it’s all just for show. The less they spend, the more it’s actually used.

if you look at the guys from 7P / Dan Grec / etc - they’ve been all over the world with lightly modified vehicles.

At shows it’s easy to tell who’s lived out of their vehicle and who’s only ever gone to events..

 

Social media ruins everything

 

Basically, if you're gonna put stuff on the vehicle, earn a dent or scratch or a good story.

If you're gonna put stuff in the vehicle.... Get it dirty. Make it smell. Tell the tale...
