yep, pretty soft, i wanted to use it bc my house (built in 1900) was framed w Doug fir, so just wanted to give a nod to the bones of the house you don’t see. I also don’t mind it showing a little wear and tear, its definitely not as pretty as these pics these days, but like old dogs, get better with age :)

What’s the deal with all these epoxy tables/slabs that have become popular in the past year or two? I see them all over social media now and I honestly don’t think they look that nice. I think a nicely done live edge slab looks a lot better.

I’ve seen some cool ones with the “river look” where you have two book matched live edge slabs with a gap between them, but I’ve also seen the same thing done with glass instead of epoxy and the glass is removable for cleaning etc

It's funny you mentioned this. I made one a while ago but never finished it. Just today I was redoing the epoxy on the legs. It has been much to hot for the last few months over here (working temp is 70-80°). The last coat I either got the mix wrong or it was too hot and it never fully cured making a mess that was sticky and hard to sand. It was finally cool enough to pour the epoxy.

    the legs.

The live edge river table. No glass, 2 1/2" of epoxy.

EDIT: I think I am the first if not the only one to keep the bark on the live edge. Here is a pic to show the multiple levels of swirls in the river.

Ding ding we have a winner...finally put a heat gun on some of it after realizing that the surface was getting very gummy after the sander heated it up a bit. The pigment in the pores bubbles up and comes up to the surface and whatever is on the surface softens up and can be scraped off with a scraper. Still doesn't get it all the way clean but keep the sander from getting gummed up. Not entirely sure what this stuff is but it seems he only used it on the sap wood in order to darken it to match the rest of the wood.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
I feel like i make some good looking stuff...
Until you guys show your work.
    Some quality stuff in here.

I'm working on simple freestanding shelves for movie collection right now.
All old plywood I've had in garage for years.

Some stains of who knows what splattered here & there that won't sand out.
    Horizontal pieces are birch.
Vertical pieces from a sheet that was marked "honduras mahogany". Had the perfect amount of it for this project.

Usually i make facing to hide edges of plywood but i think this time i will try a dark paint on edges and just a clear seal over the all the rest.

Experimented on some scraps. Looks like i need 2 coats clear to seal edges, then 1 coat paint (might rub for slight worn look), then 2 coats clear to get the sheen i want over the paint.
