2012 Transmission Kicks When Stopping Fast

I serviced my automatic transmission fluid for the first time after 115000 miles. Now if I come to a stop quickly, it will give me a kick like being rear ended. If only happens when I rolled up on a stop sign, decelerating quickly after getting off the gas. There is a 1 or 2 second delay before if gives the kick. it seems that the tranny fails to disengage. Does anyone know what is causing this? Recommendations? I was pretty meticulous about getting the fluid level correct using and ODBII reader to get the temp perfect. Thanks in advance

 

Did you cycle the gears before checking the fluid?
Was the truck running when you checked the fluid?

I need to see a picture of where you drained it, where you filled it, and where you checked the level at.

The only time that happens is when you are 2 or more quarts low. The pan takes around 3 quarts, so if you filled it elsewhere and left the tranny fluid out of the actually tranny itself without actually replenishing it to proper level, then you are going to experience symptoms like what you described.

 

Yes, I followed that video to the tee. The only anomaly I had during the Sevice was that it only drained about 1/3 of what Was expected so I cycled the gears a few times with it running during the drain. It took about three cycles to get out the expected amount.

 

what ATF fluid did you use, whens the last time you greased the u joints/driveline

 

I used the Toyota ATF WS. I just lubed my drive train for the first time a few days ago. The problem did not disappear.

 

usually that kick in the rear thing was used to be called Axle Wrap when stopping the truck was a big deal on GEN 1 trucks that used a double Cardan 2 piece driveshaft the answer was to use a #2 grease with MOLY in it stopping the clunk/wrap

 

i used the #2 Moly grease and noticed the carrier bearing had some movement. I wasn’t sure how much play was acceptable, but now you’ve got me thinking. The problem with the axle wrap theory is that it never happened before I did the transmission service and appeared immediately after.

Trying to figure out the cycling of the gears while draining thing. I've done a few DAFs and never done this or even heard of it.

Another fluid level check with the engine running in park during temp mode .
After you confirm your fluid level is good , there may be an issue with the SLT solenoid .
How did you service the transmission ?
DID YOU HAVE THE PAN OFF ?
How much fluid did you use ?

 

yeah double check the fluid level.

are you a 4x4? could be the slip joint behind the carrier bearing needs some lube.

I have not resolved it, but noticed it happens much less frequently. This might actually be because I've subconsciously adapted my driving habits and roll up on stop signs gentler.

 

I had an issue similar to what you're describing, although I did not change my transmission fluid. The clunk first appeared after I greased my driveshaft in what appeared to be the first time in a while for the truck. Took several pumps to get the grease to clear the air out from inside the joints. Got the clunking sound at stop signs & when abruptly letting off the gas while accelerating.

I read up on the issue and came to the conclusion that it may take a little while for the grease to work itself around in a neglected driveshaft. So I kept greasing it, just a few pumps with every oil change and now the clunk is pretty much gone. Maybe that's the issue here? Still worth checking the tranny fluid to make sure it's operating correctly.

 

My first thought was driveshaft.

 

I had the exact same problem with my f250, I greased the splines towards the front of the truck and it solved it immediately.

 

Was the fluid low and did you change out the sensor?
