I have a 2010 Tacoma 4x4 SR5. 168,000 miles. Bought used 2 years ago. The frame passed inspection for the frame recall issue in 2018, and passed again today (10/2020). The extended recall "warranty" runs out 2/2022. I feel that after the warranty expires, and the frame continues to rust, I'll be stuck. I owe $5k on it. I'm debating trading it in (offered $9500) just to get out from under the issue and move to something with lower miles and newer. I know it's fairly subjective, but I wanted to put it out to anyone who has an opinion, whether to keep it, ride it out, maybe have the frame looked at to remove rust, or whatever can be done (did fluid film last year, wasn't super impressed as it seemed to rust a lot more last year), or just move on.
    Thanks

The way I see it, you've got a year and some change before you need to make that decision.

    Welcome to TW.

I don't remember the size of the hole needed to qualify for the frame replacement. A dime I think...? There is an abundance of threads on the issue. Search is your friend.

Get you a new truck, It will never get better, it will only get worse. The longer you wait, the less you will get.

That frame isn't pretty but it has a long way to go before it fails

The fact it has a sticker is still amazing.

Most frames rot much further before perferation.

I believe it's dime sized to fail or have structural issues.
It was inspected by Toyota today and passed/no replacement.
If I wait 2 more years and it still passes, it'll have 2 more years of mileage and of course will be worth less in trade not to mention normal wear and tear.

Well, first off I'd coat it. It's only going to get worse if you don't. You need to fluid film it. The film will fill the pores in the metal and keep oxygen out of it which should stop the rust from spreading. I'm not a metallurgist or a fluids expert but if your worried at least make an attempt to stop it from rusting further.

Yikes. I'm moving to Maine from Idaho next spring. Having my underside descaled and repainted before I move. Hopefully that helps it last longer. I'd get out from under that one though if you have something lined up to trade into.

No holes, no bad welds or rusting that created structural problems.

I live in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley) and my 06 doesn't have a single speck of rust anywhere on the frame. My thoughts go out to you salty folks.

Not sure how to respond. It was getting a fair amount of rust. I had fluid film applied by a garage last fall. It seems worse now. Either it is possible, or I have no clue. I am no expert for sure!

But that’s also 2 more years of paying down your current vehicle, saving money for the next and not spending on tax, title and tag

I've had the truck 2 years, last year was the first time I had it applied. I knew zero about fluid film before last year. I came here searching for opinions and answers. Sarcasm is an added benefit I guess.
