Save your money....
FIRST go out camping and "wheelin" your area and build from there on what you "really" need.

We will be doing a "around the USA tour" next year.
That includes Prudhoe Bay AK, The Denpster Highway then across the Trans Canada Highway to Nova Scotia.

Im not going heavily overboard on lifts and crap like that, more on durability and carrying "spares that can fail"

Mostly staying on "easy trails"

 

Ah you guys have me thinking about ground tents now. Along with the other things people have mentioned, I live in a upstairs apartment so I don't have a convenient place to store a RTT. And i've seen some nice large tents in google. I have to google tents, but this would definitely open up the budget to buy a tonneau cover.

The truth is, i'm new to camping so i'm very much in the research phase

For the price and easy set-up takedown it's hard to beat the coleman sundome. I have about 6 seasons in one and its still in good shape despite my kids using it as a bouncy house with the air mattresses in it when they were smaller. Eureka is good but more expensive. You don't need a tent meant for Alaska for Utah. Buy decent sleeping bags (they matter). The tent just keeps the bugs and crawling critters off of you. The 6 person will fit 2 queen air mattresses with room in the front by the doors for gear storage. Stays dry with the rain fly on without condensation issues (bottom vent).

Updated list. It's getting cheaper. Bilstein 5100's to level it out (dont need an AAL because im not carrying a 150lb RTT). A bakflip mx4 cover. Tonneaus dont work well with tailgate pads so I can put fork mounts screwed into a piece of wood in the front of the bed. I think i'm at a really good price .. Any suggestions on the tonneau to save money?

Put some of that crap in your Amazon cart saved for later and watch for price changes. Prices fluctuate. I have the Audew 2000a jumper box in each of our cars. They were on sale for $67 earlier this week. I have seen the 6 person sundome tent on sale for around $80. Its personal preference, but I would take the money from the bakflip cover and buy a shell for the truck. It is nice to have that dry storage space and some added security. I have a bed rug mat and an ARE cap with vented windoors, carpeted etc. Its nice hanging out in the bed when watching my daughters soccer games on cold rainy mornings. Watch your local Craigslist for quality camping gear cheap too. Many people buy truly high-end gear camp once or twice and realize they don't like camping and sell it for pennies on the dollar. You probably don't need new shocks on a new truck but many people do it. I had 5100s on my 4Runner and I will do Bilstein shocks on my Taco when the factory suspension is worn out around 80k miles or so.

Consider the quality of your tent. If you are doing fair weather camping only and have a convenient place to be if there is a downpour, a less expensive tent will be just fine. If you are planning to camp in the boonies for several nights and prefer to stay dry and not have your tent ripped to shreds by high wind and hail, purchase a high quality tent designed to protect you from the elements. There won't be standing room. The best option, IMHO, is a hard shell topper. You might find a used one for $500-$1,000. Resell it later.

Yep. Never use the points to shop with either, just take them as a credit on your CC bill, otherwise when you use points to shop, you lose the 5% accrual of points for that purchase. Also buy everything through Amazon Smile so they donate 1% to a Charity of your choice. I have mine setup for Second Amendment Foundation (SAF).

 

I didn't know about the Amazon smile. Good deal. I set it up to donate to feed kids.
I also set up notifications on fb classifieds to let me know when a tonneau cover or predator steps show up. I'd like to sell my tube steps and get the predator steps.

 

Good cause for the Smile Donations! The OEM predator steps are occasional listed in my area on CL. I bought mine on Amazon warehouse deals for $215 but spent $40 on SS hardware. If you are in a bigger market area you can find some great deals on camping stuff. Tomorrow is "prime Day" so check back on there for anything you need. My "saved for Later" cart probably has 100 things I don't need but will buy if the price is right lol.

 

what card do you have that you can use the % back to pay for the cc bill? all the points i get with my Amazon card can only be used on amazon. either way, the points are like free stuff from amazon

 

I have both their credit cards and you can. You have to login to your cc account and the option is there.

 

Chase Amazon platinum I think? You have to log into your credit card account and apply your points as a statement credit. I think they will mail you a check if you want too. I just have them apply the credit as I use that card for everything.

 

op, is your shopping list made to cover towing your boat, taking bikes, and this cross country road trip?

idk specifics for needing to tow stuff and if you need to redo your suspension for that, but as far as a cross country road trip, you really dont need all that stuff. ill throw another wrench in your plans.

get a camper shell for your bed that you can somehow sleep in. you wont need a tonneau cover, or bed rack, or rtt. the shell should be big enough to fit 2 bikes in with their front wheels off. you will prob have to take them out if you're sleeping in the cab. but really just get a ground tent if you cant swing a rtt. a rtt is cool but not necessary. the shell is pretty much for the bikes. i ride an expensive mtb and am so paranoid if i can't see it since i use a tailgate pad. i would be devastated if i got back from a hike and it was gone. with no shell, you would need quite a bit of thick chain and heavy duty locks to feel comfortable.

check out a waterport/roadshower/rinse kit for pressurized water too. you could also get those lawn sprayer things from home depot or something that will work for now.
