2006 taco oil leak ?

New member, first post. Looking for some help/advice.

Ive noticed my tacoma has an oil leak. I jacked up the truck and took a look underneith. It looks like the gasket between where the engine meets the transmission is wet with oil. When i went to touch, the part of the gasket crumbled apart and fell off. It looks as if this is where the oil leak is.

What do you guys think? Assuming this is the problem, what would something like this cost to fix? Is it even worth fixing, assuming the tranny would need to be dropped. The tacoma is a 2006 with only 83k miles.

 

Rear main seal Id say no question. You'll have to drop the trans. Depends who you are if it's a big deal. That leak looks pretty bad so you may or may not have to replace other stuf.

It's definitely worth fixing If the truck is good.
I would fix asap

 

Considering the truck only has 83k miles, id like to run it atleast another 100k. What do you think how much itd cost ?

 

Again depends, if you diy 50$ or maybe less. If not then probably more then 600$. Never actually had it done myself. Others can chime in with a better idea.

 

My Lexus had a rear engine seal leak, I tried Bar's rear main seal repair and it worked! It's $8.49 on Amazon, it's worth a try..

I've heard of that, but with such low mileage I wouldn't. If you've ever opened up the valve covers that a sealer has been used on its never sup with pretty. If I were you I'd fix it the right way, but it's your truck and sometimes a low cost fix works

 

what gasket fell apart?
there is no gasket there.
is it a plastic inspection plate for the torque converter bolts? thats what the picture looks like, I have a manual so I dont know.
if its a plastic inspection plate you can take the plate off and look inside, if its dry in there they oil may be coming from the Valve covers and dripping down the back of the block.

 

It’s worth fixing.
4WD trucks are worse.
If you don’t have the tools or equipment, it might be better left to an independent shop.

 

they are saying the rear main seal. it is up above that seam. back of the motor. where the output shaft comes out.

I have a 2005.
Most shops I've seen (not dealerships) will usually quote between 500-700$
That's a goodly amount of oil you've got all over everything under there, if you can do it I'd say pony up the cash and have it properly replaced. Unless you can manage it yourself and save some money.
As others have said it's worth it to fix and you'll see tonnes more miles from that truck.

The Bar's, I wouldn't use. It may seal the leak up but the trade off is that you'll end up fouling up your entire engine. I have seen enough fouled valve trains to make me avoid those types of additives.

EDIT: Also I actually have a 2005 not a 2006, I just lost my mind a bit there I guess .

 

Very much agree, for the amount of oil it worth it. Fouled valves are not joke.

 

I'm sure you're right about build up but I've been driving it for at least 3 years after using it, car is running fine.

It looks like the OP has enough oil coming out that the Bar's may or may not be able to fix that leak.

It's just a gamble.

If the stop leak doesn't fix the leak you'll end up having to replace the seal anyway but then you'll already have the additive in there fouling up the internals.

If you only wanted it for a few more years or were going to sell it I'd say give the Bar's a shot.

Im gonna take it in to get it fixed right. Had the truck been up there in mileage, i wouldve just used the seal additive. But i think at 83k, its worth doing it the right way

 

I agree. Fix it right and be done with it.

 

FWIW, if it's a 2006, get A leakdown test done on the cooling system while it is in to make sure you don't toss a bunch of money into the engine just to have to rip into it again to replace the head gaskets.
