Maintenance on Icon Delta Joints UCSa

This is my first time needing to do maintenance on UCAs. I have a lot of questions (sorry).
I cant find any info or videos on how to properly maintain my delta joints... and Icon isn't the easiest people to get a hold of right now.

*How often do I add grease?
*Which grease should I use?
*Should I use the needle nose fitting? If not; how do I do it with the Zerk fitting?

If there are any videos showing how to grease the joint and bushings, I'd love to get the link.

The Delta Joints should be greased with Moly every 5,000 miles. There were 2 different zerk fittings that came with mine and I opted for the standard over the needle

 

I Googled “Icon delta Joint uca maintenance”. Wasn’t too hard. This was the first video that popped up.
This is for the uniball but the only difference is that you have a ball joint zerk to grease at the same times as the UCA zerk fittings.

Lol I was about to link that video too but remembered it didn’t mention Delta Joint at that time of recording. The only Delta Joint video they have was only advertising its release

 

Yea, I watched the video last night.

I watched that video last night. But it doesn’t mention the type of grease to use... do the delta joints take the same grease as the bushings?

Another thing that threw me off... I didn’t realize the delta joints can be ordered with 2 different adapters (needle nose or zerk).

 

The poly bushings use a different type of grease. I recommend Lucas Red N Tacky

 

I accidentally installed one of the delta joints yesterday without any anti seize. Should I remove it and put in the anti seize or just leave it?

 

The bushings require silicone grease. Or they will start to degrade prematurely.

The delta joint/ball joint. You can use whatever to use to grease on your druve shaft zerks. Lucas red, amsoil multi,....any ngli2 grease will work.

Id recommend one with moly. The delta joints arent sealed on the bottom or top...so youll want the moly to help keep sand and dirt away from the metal surfaces inside the delta joint

@Icon_Adrian Can the zerk fittings be swapped out while they are on the vehicle? Also, is it normal for the UCAs to leak out grease from the bottom from driving the truck? My passenger side seems to be leaking a bit but not the driver side. (There was a bit more grease but I cleaned it off with a rag.) I've only had my UCAs on for a few weeks.

 

Since there are no boots to enclose it, the grease does become prone to sling. I only notice it more when I go off-roading

 

Ive had mine for 3-4 yrs and around 70k miles. Pretty sure one of them just started making noise, only noticable on wash boards or curbs. Other than that they've been fine

@b_r_o thanks for the response, did you also notice some grease squeezing/leaking from the bottom of the DJ?

 

Of course, gotta just keep pumping it in there. Every joint is going to do that, it's just you usually can't see it behind the dust cover

There is a little bit of movement at one of them, can't remember which side when I checked it. It may be the noise I'm hearing

I greased them every oil change for the first year, then I started slacking

 

@Tacompa Yes, the zerk fitting can be changed while on the vehicle. Looks like the grease is weeping oil. High pressure MOLY grease is less likely to separate under pressure. Delta Joints have a wiper seal built into to the bottom of the joint so no boot it needed. If you are greasing them regularly it wont be a problem.

 

@Icon_Adrian thanks for the response! It is a picture of the grease that came with the DJ from factory, ~1k miles. I did do some light off-roading when camping last week might be the reason it slung off.

I mistakenly used the valvoline multi-vehicle grease (see below) on the UCA's polyurethane bushings. This grease separated and was weeping from the zerks. I plan on using the remaining Valvoline multi-vehicle grease on the DJs and lubing regularly. When I finish the tube, I'll upgrade to a high pressure moly grease.

For the polyurethane bushings, I bought a new grease gun and a tube of the silicone super lube grease. I'm going to pump that in the UCAs. Should I just pump the super lube into the poly bushings and have it push the valvoline grease out over time or should I remove and clean the bushings? I really don't want to have to remove the bushings.

From my experience, Lucas Red N’ Tacky prevents squeaks better than Super Lube for the bushings.

Regarding the Delta Joints, I’d only use moly, per Icon’s recommendation. Use up the other grease on other zerks like the u-joints. Lucas Red N’ Tacky works well for the those also

 

How much oil in the upper bushings? I started pumping but the bushing started to bludgeon so I stopped.

 

Make sure you loosen the UCA bolt first. If the upper bushings bulges when you grease them, press the grease fitting's ball to let out some of the grease/air and reduce the bulging. This may happen due to trapped air.
