Is a 2021 TRD Offroad, 2WD worth it?

The price seems a bit high, but the OR “Package” has the rear locker and better tires and extra brush guards and stuff. It’d be a fine truck. It seems like you could get that truck for 33,000-34,000 dollars, though?

And ignore the 4x4 or death cult; they are talking about their emotions and needs instead of addressing your question.

As you can see a lot of people ask right away about 4x4, down the road sell it time, resale is better on a 4x4.

i think for those uses you are more than ok. especially if the price difference is $5,000+ for a similarly equipped 4x4.

I just started looking a week ago, I always assumed Offroad editions were all 4x4... so I was a bit shook when I saw it wasn't

    It's a secret
The truck you want will be worth every penny you spend on it because it's value to you specifically means more by how hard you worked for your dollar no matter the amount you spend.

Be frugal, be cheap, be thrifty, be calculating, be practical, be spendy, be extravagant...

Man, costs have gone up then. I’d say go for it if it’s the color and setup you basically want.

Well, you could always try to find a SR 4x4 if it's that important to you. It's your choice! :)

Me, I'd rather have the higher trim level at 2wd in SoCal. For snow states is a different story, but it doesn't sound too me like you are off to Moab any time soon.

    Cheers!

Hey, I live in Ohio, where it snows. A lot. You dont even need 4x4 here - I have gotten by with 4x2 - easily. Toyota has been making Prerunners for years and they do fine - even on trails.

Now, the money part. It seems the dealer is high on the $36k. Your resale will be less and less of a resale market. But dont let the mall-crawler crowd on TW fool you - there is a market for a 2wd Tacoma and still a market for Prerunners - but at the right price.

I don’t disagree about 4wd vs 2wd, but the question was whether to buy a 2wd off road trim that comes with a locking rear diff and, I assume, ATRAC. I see no reason to pay for that if 4wd is not important to you. Why not get the sport or SR5 instead?

    this and that...
you yourself said that your sr was 2wd and you did absolutely fine, even offroading! you know exactly where and what places you go to and how capable your skills as a driver are. if you know these things thats all that matters, not what propaganda is being preached.

If you've got a 2WD with a locker and good tires (aired down) in Southern CA deserts, you can go just about anywhere with good driving. I did it for 10 years with a Ranger that only had a LSD (see avatar). I can remember getting stuck only one time. A locker is significant on a 2WD truck.

If you are TRYING to find hard trails, yes you will find the traction limits of 2WD. If you just want to go camping in the desert and play around, I think you're fine (especially with the locker).

The 2 years of "free" service doesn't amount to much.At most 4 oil changes and a tire rotation.however I would still go new.

OR comes with locker. Same price as a sport without locker. Extra bit of security if you want it at the sacrifice of a hood skewp.

SoCal, 2wd would be just fine as a DD. I'm in Ohio too, in the sticks. 4wd is handy to have, but not a must. I DD'd 50mi round trip to work for many yrs with just a 2rwd. Winter of '93 was one for the books, we got hammered. I picked up a used beater PowerWagon the next year. Never been w/o a 4wd/AWD or both, since. Presently, 2 CRV's and the Taco.

My 2007 trd off road was 2wd. It was a total bro truck with a 6 inch lift and all that Jazz, never again. It was literally useless

@newbson9696 I think you have your answer!

Since you're in SoCal, go get the 2wd OR.

Don't get the cheap seats (SR) or you'll be one of those guys asking how to add seat heaters, fog lights, intermittent wipers, keyless entry, power sliding window, dual climate control, turn signal mirrors, LED DRLs, fender flares,, the color instrument cluster (j/k on that last one, they are now standard).

Tell us how it turned out!!
