    Question:
My son removed the carpet from these prefab stairs. He would like to replace the treads or cover (not my preference) the treads to produce a hardwood appearance.
What’s the consensus on here? I would prefer remove and replace, that said have any of you done this effectively?

Adding on is problematic, you don’t want anymore than 3/8 variance on riser heights overall.

Agreed, the issue is the treads are mortised into the side stringer which is how the tread is supported, being prefab. My son is painting the riser which will remain. I think I need to remove and replace each tread then move on to the next...

What are you planning on supporting the new tread with?

Not sure, I need to remove one tread and see what I have to work with. Maybe add a ledger to each stringer level with the lower edge of mortise...

What's the flooring in the entry and upstairs hallway going to be? If he goes with engineered laminate it's easy enough to rip the bullnose off the existing treads flush with the riser. Then install new laminate bullnose and plank. If I went that route I wouldn't bother painting the risers. I'd wrap both the treads and risers in that laminate.

I installed new hardwood on all of 2nd floor and added a matching bullnose to top riser

Post up when you pull one of the existing treads so we can see what the actual build is. How's the access to the underside of the staircase?

Worse case scenario, start from scratch with new lvl stringers. Hopefully adding blocking works and the new tread hides the old mortise.

Agreed. I’m thinking of making the new treads 1/4”-1/2” deeper to hide the mortise
