What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Be sure to use the proper grit and thinner wipe everything more than once. Also, when it comes to automotive paint, less is more. If it too think it’s more likely to crack and chip.

 

Yup! All in the prep work. I laid down the base coat last night but way too thin, it’s all splotchy. Need to get another quart and spray it a little more thicker.

The base coat blended nicely into the “C” pillar. Going to clear in a few minutes.

 

Welded some spacers inside the day star body lift bed mounts

 

Went a smidge overboard on the clear. Used three quarts of Omni MC730 for the roof and hood. Gives me a lot of allowance to cut and buff it, I don’t want the clear failing again.

Little bit of orange peel, but that’s expected before cutting and buffing. It’ll look great hopefully once it’s detailed.

I used four quarts of House of Kolor base in Toyota #204 Metallic Black Metallic, preceded by Clausen Sandy Plastic Primer.

Hard part will be blending the pillars, I didn’t want to paint the whole cab.

Did that all with a $70 Harbor Freight paint gun.

 

I would recommend to add some additional material to the bottom of the bed to prevent the spacer from punching through (more surface area to disperse the load).
I don't have a BL, but from what other people have said about that kit, over time it's done that

Looks like it's on thick, should buff out fine. I hope yours ends up better than mine did! I attempted the roof this past weekend and I did something wrong because those are NOT water droplets on the roof.... It's under the paint.

I don't have a spray gun (yet) so I rattle canned it from automotivetouchup.com. The experience coulda been better that's for sure! 2 cans of base coat dripped paint and 2 of the cans of clear spattered all over so I had to wet sand like crazy. Undecided on what I want to do next - try again or take it some place.

 

My buddies got some 1in square tube laying around. Figure I’ll weld that to both sides of this piece. I’ve seen the pics of these things punching through the bed mounts

 

It's a little easier to do it with an HVLP, you can really fine tune so many things like fan pattern, air quantity, and paint flow. I'm constantly adjusting my gun depending on my fan pattern and if I am spraying primer, base, or clear.

 

from what google tells me, there may have been some moisture on the surface before I painted either the base layer or the clear. It was towards the end of the day so the temps were dropping so who knows. Maybe the humidity started to go up. I agree, HVLP may yield better results but I'd like to practice on something first and not learn on the truck!

Sounds like you're on top of it. If you don't carry much weight and stick to pavement those spacers will likely be fine.

I read about that but that sounded like much smaller bubbles, almost like pin dots?

 

Edit: Did a much closer inspection of seatbelts, and there is not quite enough space to reverse them. It might be possible if you took a BFH to the area, but even that might not work. I'm off to junkyard to see if they might have a decent driver side.

 

Its just residual dust from a rust bomb... I drove over one of the big ones... The shrapnel put holes in my frame too... Few cans of Rustoleum and you're back in the game! lol
