I was talking about @Mike likes Tacos - I'm not sure if you need emissions in PA, in AZ you just rip that stuff out, but in CA you're not going to have an easy time 4 linking without removing the tank and relocating the emissions crap like this.

That grey third gen with the ruff stuff 3 link kit had a nice setup for not a lot of money.

yes, he's got a legit setup. I'd love to do a +2" kit in the front and something like his in the rear. That would be a 10/10 build for my use.

I think the 2" kit is a waste of money but he got a good deal on it. With my 3.5 i cant do trails like Dusy Ershim anymore but i think ill get more use out of my truck going this new direction and still be able to do rock crawling stuff.

Still debating what i want in the end but im leaning towards tacoma being a long travel desert ride and get a razor or old 4x4 for technical small trails.

Are you going to trailer your truck to the desert?

Dude, bring your truck up to utah after I finished the 4 link on my brothers truck. I'm cheap. I take payments in beer and pin wheels. you know this.

Exactly why I went links. it really was not any more money that a leaf set up.

Utah doesn't have this BS. I'm gonna start offering a service for you California guys to register your trucks at my Utah address to ditch the stupid smog shit.

I got my truck pretty dialed in for this. I still need bypasses for all 4 corners but just with the 4 coilovers, the truck is stupid fast in the rocks and desert so far. I did a standard 4 link on my truck becuase of the packaging issues of trailing arms on a short bed. I'm about to start my brothers truck (2007 double cab short bed). We are doing TMR Trailing arms on his. Knowing what I know now after doing my truck. I think I have all the packaging and geometry sorted out. We will see how it goes.

My truck has a Baja Kits +2 up front, 8" shocks and 550 pound springs. Rear is double triangulated 4 link with 16" coilovers running 200/250 springs, 17" of travel bump to strap.
My brothers truck has a camburg 3.5 kit with bypasses. The rear we haven't started yet but looking at 16" coilovers and 18" bypasses and 20-21" of travel with the trailing arms.

and some pictures just because this truck is cool to look at.

I'd like to subscribe to truck pics please

What rear axle are you running there? What do you mean by the packaging issues of trailing arms on a short bed?

Axle is too close to the cab on a short bed. Makes it difficult to run a canoe style trailing arm as you can’t push the shock far enough forward. It can be done and you’ll get 20-23” of travel but a long bed with similar setup will be pushing 30” of travel

Gotcha, that makes sense. I'm pretty ignorant but interested in learning.

Personally the trailing arm style isn't appealing because it looks as if you need to mount it below the axle which seems to reduce clearance and breakover angle a decent amount, but that could just be because all the ones I see are for go fast machines.

Exactlty what @snowsk8air2 said. Its super tight to get the bypass and coilover mounted on the trailing arm without cutting into the back of the cab. That's why on my brother's truck we are going to use the TMR Customs trailing arms and it should clear the cab based on the measurements I took. The second issue is getting the trailing arm mounted on the frame side higher than the frame so it isn't hanging below the frame. We are going to have to modify the rear body mount to clear as well as modify the slider mount and tie it into the bed cage.

BFG 39's. So really 38's cause I didn't want to try and make a 40" tire fit.

exactly. Hurts to short change yourself travel but shit 20-21" of travel is better than the 17" I'm stuck with. but its a huge difference in 17" of travel on links than leaf springs.

Yeah most are Probably designated desert rigs. That said, at the rear axle it’s no lower hanging than a spring under leaf pack. Key is to keep the front mounts up and out of the way.

Well I had the right range lol. Almost ended up with 38’s on mine due to the 37’s backorder pushing back for months. But I found some finally

Yep. exactly what I ran into when I linked my truck

I have a build thread in the IFS form, google search for "hanks brand new broken junk" and you'll find the thread with pictures and details there.

The rear axle is a Spidertrax fabricated 9" with 3.5" Axle tubes full float with 40 spine axle shafts

Yeah links cycle much better than leafs for sure. I’m just maintaining my setup for another year or so maybe before I jump to some sort of link setup. I just want a dd able ultra 4 Tacoma. Is that too much to ask?

Nope! Not at all. I'm trying to get mine to that point as well. After my brothers truck, my truck is going back in the garage to start the internal cage. I figure that's the next best spend of money before I put this thing on it's lid. Looked through your thread, and your cage turned out damn nice. Gonna need some pointers on how you got it so tight.

    Thanks
I followed this design with some advice from the owner of this truck.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/toyotally-awesome-08-tacoma.328604/

The main tube from front to back was a royal pain. Grab some non-dom and some appropriate size sleeve tube to cut, chop, sleeve and mock up that one. After a few tries it’ll be close enough to your liking and then you can copy the Frankenstein piece into one piece of dom.
