Is a 2021 TRD Offroad, 2WD worth it?

I understand, for me its just kind of the that doubt of, it would be nice to have it just in case I need it. But what if I never do?
Where do you live? What types of situations?

Fair enough. I'd obviously have a much different opinion if my dealer hadn't dropped the ball so bad, but I'm trying out other local dealers as warranty work needs done. Hopefully someone will step up.

Price excludes tax, tags, and processing fee of $500. Bought my 17 there are they usually come down on posted price.

I had several big Jeeps back in the day, for the younger ones here -- these were body on frame vehicles built from 1963 to 1991. Allowing a bit of understanding for a 1963 design, the Wagoneer was the easiest vehicle to live with I ever had. I read years ago in a road test that "the Wagoneer was built for people first, cargo second" and that really was true. The Wagoneer looked and felt bigger than it actually was.

It had no blind spots, was very spacious and was surprisingly nimble with an amazingly tight turning circle, easy to work on too. Many had full time 4 wheel drive systems that calmly took you anywhere you needed to go with no levers to pull or hubs to lock -- this was cutting edge in the day, a four wheel drive "the wife" could drive.

Judged against it's contemporaries of the day, I also had a Dodge RamCharger, a second generation (1984) of an already 10 year newer design than the Jeep. The RamClunker was an awkward cow to drive: turning circle of a bus, noisy as a metal shed on wheels, blind spots that could hide a Chevy Nova and I froze my @$$ off too! I did respect it however -- it was tough as an old boot and would fly through the snow.

    Like, so many.
I live in Alabama. We get snow a couple of time a year. We had a very bad winter storm that shut our city down for several days a few years ago and I said “never again.” But there were a couple of times I got stuck on some wet, grassy hills just going camping. I go off road on purpose now, but I use 4wd a couple of times of year just because of road conditions.
But I don’t hate on 2WD trucks. Especially when you understand their limitations.

I have never needed 4wd in the 7 years of owning my truck, then again I don't do any crazy offroading either, and I don't live where it snows. I have taken it around in the Sierras and Death Valley (again, nothing crazy) and haven't run into a situation where I wish I had 4wd. The rear locker is great, and I have definitely used that. It's kind of an added bonus for me.

It all depends on where you live and what your intended use is for the truck. Not everyone needs 4wd, and the 2WD TRD OR is definitely a suitable alternative if your needs call for it.

I can understand not wanting 4wd, but why put a rear locker on a 2wd truck? Don’t you think that money would be better spent on 4wd?

That’s already been said above and doesnt answer my question. Let me ask my question a different way. If you don’t think you need 4wd, why pay for a rear locking diff and other off-roady options that come with the OR?

the original toyota engineers thought it'd be useful even on the prerunners. it's been almost 30 years since then and hundreds of thousands sold so obviously there is a market for it.

the poster you quoted said he has used his. what answer are you looking for?

Another way to look at it is that you can get a 4x4 SR5 for about the same price as a 2wd OR. I’d rather have the 4x4 SR5. I think the 4wd will out perform the locker mostly because most of the trucks weight is on the front axle; albeit I’ve never owned a 2wd pickup with a locker

and if someone who doesn't take their truck off rock crawling but wants things like push to start, bilstein sus, and LED DRL's then they'd probably go with the 2wd OR. that's why these trucks come with different trims and options. not everyone wants the same thing.

4x4 SR5 > 2WD Off Road. I'd go that route if money is a factor.

I’m not positive, but I assume you can get keyless start, LED DRLs, and other TRD bling on the Sport. Are the Bilstein shocks really worth it? I personally couldn’t tell a difference between them and the shocks on my 2016 SR5

I’m looking for the reason why there is such a market.

Used his what? His rear locker? What’s your point? If I had a 2wd with a locker, I would use it too. I’d just rather have 4wd with no locker then 2wd with a locker. Seems super obvious to me but obviously not to others, thus i am asking the question.

maybe they're worth it to someone but not to you. that's why toyota gave its customer options.

Prices are nuts. I've seen a lot of Gen1 tacos on CL in the $15k range, up to $20k for low mileage trucks (50-80k miles). That seems absurd. But a truck is worth what people will pay for it. I sold my Gen1 with 325k miles for $5k, quickly. Only paid $12k for it 10yrs and 225k miles earlier.

There are plenty of good trucks out there though. I know people who have gotten rid of a great tacoma to trade up to full size for towing, or to trade down to a car for commuting gas mileage for example. There are a whole world of people out there who don't mod or offroad their trucks. Not everyone is a Brah on TW.
