i haven't done it myself but I've seen pretty big jacksmelt used successfully as bait for lingcod.

I was just reading back on some posts I missed and read this again. Back-to-back 130+ boat tournaments within the last few weeks? That's a good way to stunt the fishing forsure.... holy shit! I'm surprised they're allowed to do that - especially to an iconic lake like that one.

happens a lot man. They do a pretty good job of returning the fish to the lake though. Still sort of makes them shy for a bit afterwards

Didn’t tournaments switch to measure/weigh then release on spot? They’ll get docked for improperly handling fish

Nah still 5 fish weigh in at launch per team. But they must release fish 5 miles from launch.

kayak rules are measure with a bump board and release on spot, honestly all tournaments should be like that if you ask me. Surprisingly it didn’t change to that with social distancing and all that.

Totally agree. Doesn't make sense that they haven't done what the kayaks do. Makes it easier and safer for everyone/everything.

I always watch those and think about how much stress probably goes into getting not only everything prepped and ready to rock n' roll before the tournament, but then that pressure of trying to be first and take home the prize, which in a lot of those cases, that prize is the money they use to feed and shelter their family. I've only been in a couple tournaments years ago that were more of like; "win a T-shirt and gift card to Applebees" kind of tournaments. Couldn't imagine $100k+ on the line.

I know it’s Googan and a lot of people don’t like Googan, but this was an awesome series to watch. I honestly hope they do more of these because the cinematography and seeing these guys as just normal people was awesome.

if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend the watch, this has the catch, weight and instant release I believe you were talking about.

    Anytime dude!!
I was gonna let those two go but my buddy who got the ghost shrimp that day wanted the big one. Smaller was gut hooked, got it out, but bleeding pretty good. So kept.

Striper are actually pretty damn good. Mostly let go because of mercury content, but I also like catching big fish, so I like to give em time to grow. Striper are awesome fighters. Feels pretty good knowing a fish that’s been growing for 10 years can be put back to get bigger for 10 more. But I also love catching some good fish, coming home and bbq’n that night. That’s pretty much the pinnacle of an epic day for me. Regardless, I try to respect all the fish I catch. Quickest possible unhook with the least handling if I’m letting it go. Quickest kill if I’m keeping it

Hell yeah. I’ll have to give this series a watch. Some of the googan dudes are a bit annoying for me, but I love what they have been able to do in such little time. I especially like Jon B. Something about his edits and how he fishes is badass. Definitely some dudes to look up to!

Im thinking about going up towards Markleeville within the next couple of weekends and wading that river that runs past the town (I think its Markleeville creek). A couple of years ago on the way to Bodie my brother and I stopped there and had a couple decent bites. I guess its supposed to be damn good trout fishery. I need to do it more... dont know enough about trout fishing and it bugs me!

i backpacked in the Golden Trout Wilderness for 11 days. my brother was the only one that brought a fly rod. he learned on that trip and actually caught fish.

me, i hacked thru the fish with a UL spin set up. so delicious.

i tried the fly rod and i was NOT good with it. like not at all.

its definitely something to take time and learn. My grandfather taught me as he was a retired teacher who volunteered at a resort that taught people to fly fish. Fishing was our "thing" and i learned so much from that man, never enough time with them to soak up everything you can.

I need to try it again. I tried it a few times when I was younger, but gave up. I wonder if it would come more natural for me now.
