I've had 2, 2nd gen Tundras, while they tow much better the the Tacoma, it's far from a good tow machine. It's a half ton truck.

This is not true. Please read my reply to Knute above. I really wish folks would stop perpetuating this myth that an insurance company in the USA can deny coverage for being overweight.

I will disagree with you, I love being out in the middle of no place for week(s). Going places like seeing & walking into the Arctic Ocean.

Not enough emphasis is put on keeping these trucks light. I think you can rock the Alu Cab camper, just treat the rest of your setup like you’re backpacking and you’ll be fine. Don’t pack anything for “might use it someday” type scenarios.

100% this. Center of gravity changes and weight are underrated.

It also seems slightly odd to me too that the Tacoma is a popular over landing truck considering it’s relatively low GVWR/payload. Ronny Dahl had a video lately where he was comparing stock rigs for over landing and, although the Tacoma was not included, the comparable Jeep gladiator was included and he ripped on it for the low payload. The Ford Ranger and (gasp) Honda Ridgeline have better payload capacity in similar trims.

Insurance claims are denied everyday, some insurance companies will even drop you if you modify your vehicle in certain ways such as a large lift...

I didn’t see that episode, but isn’t the 79 series landcruiser like 1100 kg (~500 lbs) payload??
Granted the chop for the tray and canopy adds some, but no way does it gain 1000lbs

I’m not sure, but I know he ended up choosing a Hilux with a (I think) 2000lb payload (same as the new Ranger). Payload was not a big part of my thought process when I bought my Tacoma, so I was surprised to find it was a bit of a lightweight compared to other mid sized trucks in that category.

Well I think Toyota is more conservative than Ford and Jeep based on reliability over the decades. And payload is probably rated differently between car companies.

My thought was that the Tacoma is not marketed to someone that wants to haul a lot of weight. High payload capacity is generally at odds with ride comfort and off-road capability. They gave it just enough to be called a truck that has an off-road penchant. My confusion is that it seems popular with the over landing crowd. Perhaps that is because of the lack of competition.

So the secret, $1million dollar question is; WTF is important about this number? Very much like speed, the faster you go, the better the brakes should be. Overload a truck and then try to stop it coming down a hill, or at speed on the freeway. Discuss amongst yourselves...LMAO

For car camping an hour from the interstate with a RTT and a stove it's fine. I can't imagine taking one to even the ordinary parts of Africa, let alone the rough parts.

The Tacoma is running on reputation, brand loyalty and nostalgia. Every generation the trucks get sketchier and they burn up a little more of that brand loyalty trust fund that their parents spent decades saving up.

haha I’m not an “over lander”(at least I think not haha) person I just want to build an RV type rig for sleeping in ski resort parking lots or At the base of mountains so I don’t have to wake up at the butt crack of dawn or spend 80k+ to build out a 4x4 van.

I also use my truck heavily for mountain bike adventures. Which that is pry where I would be past payload significantly after accounting for people and bike weight

I’d get an fwc or the like if it wasn’t such long lead times and the same issue of payload haha

you don’t need a huge setup to go overlanding either. I don’t work Monday-Friday, so taking long trips are a big part of my life every couple of years. Picture below was my third trip, first was in 1983, driving up to northern Canada & Alaska, but my first to the Arctic, but not the last. I also will take a trip to Goosebay Labrador via the Trans Labrador highway, spent some time up there in the Air Force. That trailer has over 50k miles in all types of roads, The Gila, San Juan mountains, the NMBDR and more.
Just cause it’s not for you, don’t knock it
