Wheels dont spin free...

I finished my lift this weekend and when I was spinning the wheels ( they were off the ground obviously) it seems really hard to get them to spin, and once they do there is a little grinding noise...and they stop spinning / slowly stop spinning pretty quickly....

could it be wheel bearings ?

 

Brake rotors. Don't worry about it.

 

Could be the rotor sliding through the brake pads. That makes a metal on metal sound when you spin them by hand.

But if there is some drag..wouldnt that affect MPG ? I never had wheels not spinning freely....seems strange to me

 

You shouldn't have to fight them but if you spin them by hand they won't stay spinning for long. There's a lot of stuff spinning with those wheels and a lot of weight. I would sa (guessing) if you spun a wheel by hand you could get a couple revolutions out of the tire before it stops. When the wheel is spinning, the spinning rotor keeps the brake pads away from the rotor until you hit the pedal and force everything together. At slow speeds you can hear the rotor sliding through the pads. This will create some friction but every car with discs do the same thing.

Did you try this before you installed the lift and notice a difference afterwards? You did change your geometry with the lift but that shouldn't have too much affect on spinning your wheels by hand. How does it drive, do you notice it behind the wheel, any vibes, slow to take off, grinding noises?

 

had one wheel bearing replaced already....just wondering if the other one is going....

WHY Toyota would only replace 1 bearing is BEYOND me !!!!!!!!

 

Your truck is DB LB right 2006 that would mean that most likely your option was Limited slipp that year. That would make your wheels dont spin in the air

 

06 DC LB yes, but I have open diff..base model SR5

I dont have LS

 

OP, are you referring to the front end or rear of the truck? The front will not have limited slip, the rear may or may not, check the rear end for a tag at the drain plug that says "LSD Fluid Only" to find out if you have limited slip or an open diff. If you had one bearing replaced already, it would stand to reason the other side would need replacing... Sounds silly to replace one without the other. Does this issue happen with both sides of the truck?

 

Even base models of DC LB were getting LSD on the back. Look for sticker. How hard is to turn the wheel. Very hard may be its limited slipp. Do you have original sticker from the truck?
I have Sr5 with limited slipp To my knowlege pretty much all DC LB of 05-07 were getting LSD on the back even SR5's

 

There is a sticker on ther but it does not indicate LS....it just has a bunch of #'s on it.

I have seen the LSD sticker, this isnt one of them. I wonder if there is a site to decode a VIN.

Did you buy truck new or used. I painted my sticker over when I was painting diff. Do you have a window sticker from the truck it will say right there. One of the last options in right column something around $350

 

Did you also put new wheels on with the lift?

 

I put wheels on a long time ago..it seems like my MPG has gone down 1-2 mpg also...

I only see one sticker on the back....I think there may be some confusion...I'm referring to the front wheels, not the rear. sorry if that wasnt clear.

 

I'd go back to my other question, does it happen with both sides? Does it happen just with the side that did not have the new bearing put in, if so, that's probably the culprit but you should notice that when you drive, especially in turns. Can you shake the wheel when it's elevated (checking for play in the bearing).

 

Little to no play/ shake but I can hear a little grinding....but as was mentioned on here..someone said the rotor.

 

dirt or grit in the brake pads, rubbing the rotor. It will sound like a failed bearing and be hard to turn. pull the pads and compress the caliper pistons and I would bet they would spin freely, or at least much better.

 

I'm about ready to take this truck and trade it....SOOOOOOO many issues with it.

I'm embarrassed..I use to tell everyone how great Toyota was ( when I had my Tundra)... now they see me in a rental from the dealership once a month....cause the truck is in the shop,

shit if I'd wanted problems I would have bought a Dodge..or Chevy !!

My wifes Hyundai runs circles around this truck....( I'm sorry to say)

maybe I just got a lemon....
