Spiker Engineering has officially released the ULTIMATE Lift hood struts, the latest version of our original High Lift Hood Struts. They can be purchased directly from our website at https://spikerengineering.com/product/16_tacoma.

Our ULTIMATE Lift hood struts are designed to open the 3rd Gen Tacoma’s hood to any position between stock prop rod height and up to 8” higher than stock (an increase of 2” over our original High Lift hood struts).





A unique feature of all Spiker kits is the ability to choose the hood open height during installation. Choose the lower height for low overhead garages (or if you have ditch lights); the maximum height to experience the incredible added light and access; or any position in between to suit your needs. And if you ever decide to change the open hood height, you can relocate the brackets to a new position, without needing to buy a new strut kit.

I have the “last gen” model and it’s one of the best mods I did!! It opens 6” higher than the stock prop. The install is straight forward, took about an hour.

I'm installing an air compressor under the hood so I figured these would be a good idea to facilitate the more frequent opening/closing of the hood. Somewhat safer I think, too. Ordered!

One question?
If you’re running hood ditch lights, will you still be able to get the extra 8 inches of hood space. Or do the lights hit the windshield before you gain the 8 inches?

 

That'll depend on the type of ditch light - some are lower profile than others. Even with the worst offenders you should be able to raise the hood about 4-5" higher than stock, by pushing the ditch lights forward on the brackets:



With some of the lower profile ditch lights available now, you can probably go the full height.

With our kits, you can choose the open height to fit your situation - so with ditch lights, you find the height of the hood just before they touch the windshield, and lock that position in during installation. Folks have found this flexibility of our kits to be very useful.

 

Once you get used to having the struts, you'll be shocked when you need to open a "strut-less" hood. It'll feel so "yesterday", having to wrestle with the heavy hood. And the extra height will improve access to the compressor:

You can weld them. Not sure how else it could be done.

 

There is another brand that are bolt on and no drilling. I just wish they were as good quality as OPs!

 

Agreed. But if you are even half-handy, drilling a few holes and touching up the metal with primer/paint is not all that hard, and leads to a nice solid installation.

 

I guess I am lost on that one. What do they bolt to if there is no holes drilled? I have seen people use those threaded inserts and bolts but the holes for the inserts still need to be drilled. Would have to see a picture I guess..

 

@SpikerEng I'm thinking this would interfere with the driver side mounting?

 

Hard to tell from this view, it depends on how high it is relative to the black plastic trim piece. The strut will be above the bottom of the plastic trim piece, so if the relay box is below it (or far enough away form the fender) you'll be fine.

If you want/need extra space, you can add a couple of spacers to move the mounting bracket slightly away from the fender, like these for a clutch reservoir:

 

The SPOD mount looks to be inverted and higher than mine, so I suspect I'll be good. Only one way to find out, right?
