Has anyone mounted one of these in place of their cigarette lighter?

Quite a few things at this point..
Why not get something like this instead? Does your truck not have a 3.5mm jack built in?

I'd use it to plug into the back of my apple carplay/ android auto radio. I don't use the cigarette lighter at all, so I thought removing it and putting this in its place would make for a clean look. Plus, right now I just have an android cord going to the radio that comes up from under the dash. It's fine, but if someone had an iPhone they wanted to plug in I'd have to take the radio out to plug it in.

<- This is why, and no, I have an 05, it does not have an aux port nor does my phone. I just want it in case someone needed one.

I've used it in three different trucks - minus the 3.5mm jack. Works perfect. Once you remove the whole cig lighter contraption, you will need to ever so slightly enlarge the hole to mount it. The "nut" that screws onto the back is actually rubber and sucks. Once you tighten the nut as best you can, put epoxy around the backside to secure it for good.

Is the epoxy really necessary? Does vibration cause the rubber nut to start backing out? I only ask because I'll be keeping the stock cigarette lighter. I typically keep the stock parts I've replaced for vehicles in case the next owner wants to return the car to stock form and function. I'd rather not adhere it in place or make it hard to remove in the future.

You will never be able to tighten the rubber nut. Right when it begins to barely get tight, it just pops back to the previous set of threads and then tightens again. It will definitely loosen in no time, and that panel you have to take off is not the easiest to remove/replace to install that thing.

When my daughter gets home with her truck I'll take a pic and post it.

I used one for my carplay HU and it worked great. Had to slightly enlarge the hole to get it to go in, maybe two minutes with some rough sandpaper. No issues getting the lock ring tight. I bought the 6' one and regretted it immensely, 3 foot is more than enough.

    Edit:
2008 6mt that doesn't have the switch blanks down there.

I've done it on my old taco with USB to stereo and an aux input. It worked good and the hole had to be enlarged as already mentioned. Epoxy may be needed.

I prefer the cleaner look of a square input that either replaced a switch cover or cutting a (square) hole in a switch cover for a smaller dual USB port. Epoxy also recommended.

Did one of these in my brothers truck recently and it looked great.

Got it. I'll just put some epoxy or something behind the nut to secure it like you suggested.

I saw some like that but my truck doesn't even have those blanks... that's why I'm going for the cigarette lighter route.

Keep in mind there's a lot that needs to come out before that panel can be removed. It's a bit tedious.

If you have scrawny hands you can reach down behind that panel with only removing the HVAC controls panel and get at it. I didn't have the do the whole tear apart half the dash deal to do mine.

This was exactly how I was thinking of doing mine thanks for showing me the end result. Looks great! And yea, I have scrawny hands lol and long fingers. I figured I should have plenty of space to install it after removing the radio and surround and the ac controls.

Certainly give it a try, but I don't see how you can disassemble the cig lighter and remove it, install the new USB charger and epoxy it in place without removing that panel. If you manage to do it please take a few pics of the process so I can know how to do it in the future. Good luck, and as a previous poster said, definitely get the 3 footer.

By the way, while you're at it, you might want to consider installing two while you're at it. That's what I did in my son's truck - the white one in my sig. One for his Apple phone, a second one for passengers to charge.

There is one with 2 outlets that I was looking at as well, but would it confuse the apple car play/ android auto at all you think?
