How many miles on the truck ? As far as exhaust don’t bother save the money for bumpers and such . Since your in high school your probably going to do stupid shit in it . So better be prepared for stuff to happen .

Good point. One thing I have not had good experience with is Toyota exhaust components like cats. Seems like every Toyota I have after 1997 has had to have them replaced compared to my BMWs which are pretty good about this.

Agreed. I started with a 2000 ford ranger and 10 years later after going to school for 7 years to getting my doctorate, and then working full time finally got myself my new 2019 OR. And actually during college my car was a Honda Civic (best little car I’ve ever owned)

however, that being said, I’m proud to hear someone in high school has been working and saving and not just given a nice truck. @exp98sohc Also, 15k is a straight up steal for that truck at 40k miles and will be reliable for you! Go for it!

 

15k is a straight up deal on a truck that new. I really think if you treat it well and never wreaked it it would be great to have well beyond college.
The thing is I know when I was a teenager and my brothers too that's not realistic. Something is going to happen there will be an some mistake with your first vehicle, hopefully minor but most teens do some thing to damage the first car.
I think your parents are being very protective and careful by saying you need blind spot monitor and all. The reality is that those safety and security things are good but they don't replace actually learning real driving skills and things like looking in mirrors an turning your head to see around you. My opinion is a lot of that stuff is making drivers more dumb and not using real driving skills that should still be learned. Example is my trucks back up camera. No vehicle i ever owned had one and it makes backing up easier but you still need to look over your shoulder to see behind and around you. Using only the camera you might miss someone walking to their car in a parking lot.
Blind spot same thing. I've driven cars with it and it's helpful but not as engaging as I first thought, you still have to check the mirror even to see it's light.

I know it's not cool but I'd agree with other that said you should get a $5000 car or truck to start out. Definitely something with at least dual airbags.
I drove a 1976 Dodge Aspen as my first car and it was handed down through family originally from my grandfather. Guess what I smashed a fender in the first month or two on the Dodge. Then I drove some cars that ran good but we're ugly ducks in to my 30s. One car i had most of my 20s was a 88 Isuzu I Mark i found in the classified adds for $800 with only 60,000 miles on it. Nothing was wrong with it but it needed repainted which i never did because I always needed to drive it. It was a cheap car to own, drive and insure. Had i had a shiny new vehicle like my friends did I would never have been able to buy a house at 24 either. Parking a crappy car in front of your own home is better than parking in front of some crappy rental in any new vehicle. Think about what is important to you in life. Maybe you have help and can make a newer truck like that work. Maybe you could do better with that cash to put you in a better place later to have that and more. Choose wisely.

 

yeah. i originally wanted a 2nd gen xplorer but i was told it has to have those features and my uncle had one so he offered it... im kinda stuck in the middle unless i can convince my parents to let me get a 2nd gen X

 

Uh for all the people telling this kid not to buy a '17 off of his uncle for 15k of which his parents are going to chip in half are idiots. He's essentially getting a $25-35,000 truck for $7,500 bucks outta pocket. If he manages to not wreck the truck in the next few years, he can turn around and sell it for a profit to get a new or different car/truck down the line or spend however he sees fit and make money on the deal.

OP as for your question I'd pass on the exhaust unless you really want the noise. I know all my friends and I did when we were in high school but we were also mostly driving V8 trucks.

Normally I'd agree with the hive, that a young teen should buy cheap so he can abuse it and learn on it. But this is one hell of steal, and OP has been saving up for this. He clearly already has some sense of money management. Instead of spending $5k on some beater that could become a maintenance nightmare, he's spending $7.5k on a significantly newer and (most likely) more reliable vehicle. I think most people would gladly pay the extra $2.5k for the benefits. Now, if his parents were going to give him the difference of what he would save buying a beater, then I could see an argument for passing on the truck. But otherwise, go for the truck.

I'll say OP, I do also second the comments about the exhaust. Mine with the factory TRD exhaust already drones p well at speed, and I wouldn't want a louder exhaust unless it was going to be anything resembling V8 sound, but from what I understand that's a wasted effort on our trucks.

 

i see about exhaust. how bad would the flowmaster flofx cat back be if i swapped the flofx for a 40 series... i have one that was supposed to go on the xplorer but it got sold... or could i take a super 10 and put that in instead.'of the two which would sound better? thanks. im not considering cost in this one lol

 

ive heard a super 10 sounds really good... is that true lol. also what tires owuld be good? it does need offroad cpasbility but it primarily stays on road. i last time i saw it it needed new tires...

 

Go easy... 265/75/16. It’ll give you a wee bit of lift, fill the wheel well some, and you don’t need to worry about cutting anything.

ill probably go woth the open country. seems just sbout right in price and everything. thanks! would it be better to get the whole cat back or just swap muffler? its a single side exit right? 2.5 in piping? if so, the xplorer 40 series may work... if not i may go super 10... or should i do the flofx catback? ill have to listen to more vids but im likinn the super 10 so far...

 

My suggestion, like the tires, is 'all things in moderation'. A tastefully modded truck usually performs better for a daily driver, requires less maintenance, costs less, annoys other people less (yes... exhausts annoy other people), and is likely to impact your resale value less than extreme mods. I don't know what those exhausts sound like, but I hear so many modded exhausts around me that are stupid loud. So much that even a few blocks over it makes it hard to enjoy sitting on the patio for lunch. I thought Harleys used to be the worst. Now they don't corner that market anymore.

 

i hear them too... they make great alarm clocks though... the flofx cat back doesnt sound too loud from what i gather... neither do the super 10s granted it depends on the mic but... they sound eithin reason i think??? idk anymore lol head spinning

 

Man O' Man you got that right. I'd hate to see what insurance rates for a teenage male with a near-new rig would be these days.
Especially if you live in any kind of 'major metropolis' ... Ouch!
My oldest son (32) told me his insurance rates .. On anything ... didn't start to drop until he hit 30. Any male between 16-30 ... You're gonna pay ... A LOT.
