I have a 2000 Tacoma SR5 six cylinder 3.4 L which smokes terribly on start up. Smoke is white look at my video. Never overheats no water in the oil runs like a champ. I am so frustrated I have no answers I need help. The smoke is unbelievable my gas mileage has decreased and the oil consumption has increased. I also have oil going into my airbox and dripping out through a hole in the bottom. The truck has 80,000 miles on it and is cherry.

    Blow by is likely.

Remove the oil fill cap while its running, if smoke or loud exhaust pours out it helps confirm blowby.

A slight purr from the cap is normal.

Might be able to start with a simple PCV valve.

Is it only smoking at start, or is it doing while driving too?

One of the easiest things to look for is a bad PCV valves that can cause engine oil contamination, sludge build-up, oil leaks, high fuel consumption, and other engine-damaging problems, depending on the type of failure.

Sounds similar to what I went thru last fall minus the white smoke.

I replaced the PCV valve. Smokes on startup, hardly during driving.

Does the coolant level go down slowly in the radiator? Ever have to top it off?

Nope. Coolant level stable and never has overheated. That’s why I am so confused.

Are you sure its not just normal moisture as the exhaust heats up? How long have you owned the truck?

    Thought you had a video..

I am sure this is not normal. It looks like my truck is vaping. People trip out, that there is soo much smoke. I tried to upload the video from my iPhone, but it said the file wasn’t supported.

I’ve had the truck for about three years I was the second owner and the smoking just started a couple of months ago out of the blue. Still runs perfect just smoke on start up.

more than likely oil seals on the valves. The true fix is to replace all the valve oil seals. Is this doable with the heads on the block, dont know, never tried it.

That was a thought. Would that cause oil to go into the air box?

Valve seals don't cause intake oil, thats usually crankcase blowby.

Valve seals do cause startup smoke and decel smoke.

Oil burning is so easy to smell .You figured it out you state your using much more oil .

Just how many quarts do you need to add every day ??

My limit is 2 quarts in 25 miles when it gets worse time to fix things.

Probably not. Too much smoke. I am trying to upload the video. Every time I stop and turn off the engine, then back on, smoke city. Thick white smoke.

Pure white or light grey? Have you checked the coolant level in the rad, or just the overflow reservoir?

Pure white heavy smoke. No change in coolant level radiator or reservoir. Engine never overheated and oil is clear.

Pure white is usually coolant. Any odour to it?

No odor. That was my first thought. No loss in coolant. Someone said fuel. I don’t believe it is oil or water. This photo is all I could add. This is first thing in the morning.
