Lumber rack works perfectly for this.

Nice setup. What length HD bar is that? Looks like the 68”. Is that right?

To all who are using a bed extender to haul your kayak. Are you getting any chips or dings in your tailgate driving with it down?
I bought a bed extender as I'm getting ready for a trip late October and then I read were a few said to not drive with the tailgate down due to small rocks and pebbles being kicked up. Someone else recommended wrapping your tailgate in plastic from Lowes or HD that they cover carpet with to prevent that. I'm not really into that kind of hassle factor, but don't want to screw up my tailgate either. I thought the extender was a great idea until I heard all of this. I might have to flip it, so that it's roof height and get some foam blocks that I used back in the day to haul my canoe on the roof of my 69 mustang.

For reference, I'll have about a 500 mile round trip, but mostly interstate and highway.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Setup a rock skirt off the back of your truck. I think they call them rock tammers or something. Anyway, it’s material that stretch between your truck and your trailer or what ever you have to keep from being chipped.

It’s a good excuse to buy a tailgate pad for your bikes. They run about $150 and take about sixty seconds to put on or off. I often run my tailgate dropped for kayaks and boards and stuff; I have small dings that I just fill with the $15 OEM paint match pen, which looks fine but not perfect.

I have Yakima's OverHaul HD and have been looking for their BigStack all summer with no luck. I wonder if anyone on here has any experience using it. I'm usually hauling three kayaks so this option seems to be well suited. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll find it on sale during Thanksgiving weekend.

I had never heard of one of those. That's a great idea. I make my own backpacking gear (hammocks, tarps, backpack etc..). so I'm sure that I can just make a cover that straps/velcros on to protect it. Thanks for the idea.

Very cool! Post up your work when you finish it. It’s worth noting that all the newer pads have a microfiber or plush liner on the tailgate side so they don’t make the paint hazy over time due to dust and micro movements.

    All stock.
I have a Victory 4x4 rack and some J bars off Amazon. Feels more solid than it looks. Kayaks were fine even in tropical force cross winds a couple weeks ago.

I'll trade you my Wilderness systems Tarpon 120 even up. I'd hate to see you rupture yourself. :D

Here's the prototype that should get me through my trip. I used some DWR Oxford cloth outer and fleece inner. At some point I'll order some heavier Cordura fabric to make my finale version. Initially, I was going to wrap the top over the tail gate, but realized that would catch wind and parachute with the tail gate down.
