220 plug

I have a 5,000 watt garage/shop heater in my wood shop. It was to be hardwired but I had the electrician put a plug on it and a 220v receptacle in my shop and one in the garage. That way I could bring the heater in the garage if I needed to in the winter. It only weighs about 20 pounds. Anyway, I bought a 7,500 watt heater because I need more BTU’s. Can I take the plug off the 5,000 watt one and put it on the new 7,500 one safely??

 

Depends on what plug you have .

What size breaker are you using ??

 

The 7500 will need a 40amp breaker. It also possibly will need bigger wire. If it's on 10g (which will power the 5kw fine) you'll need to upgrade to at least 8g.

 

Sounds like I should bring in a pro.

 

I just went out and got some info on the wire and breaker. I have 1 30 amp and 2 20 amp breakers in my shop. The wiring has a lot of wording on the covering.
AWG 10 CU 2 CDB with
AWG 10 ground type NM B
600 volts.

 

Returned the 220 model and got a 110.

 

The 110 model will have 1/2 the heat output of the 220 at the same current. If you need the extra heat of the 7500 watt unit, you went the wrong direction.

 

I already have a 5000 watt one installed. Instead of having a contractor rewire and change the breakers for another 2500 watts (8000 btu’s), I just bought a 1500 watt. No re-wiring needed. Also it’s 5000 btu’s so I would only gain 3000 btu’s for all the trouble of bringing in a professional.

 

It’s a wood shop. Wood stove.

 

It’s not big enough for a stove. I would not able to put a stove far enough away from the things in the shop to safely use it. I would love to have one but not in this shop.
