First piece of advice is to never tell the dealer you’re looking at putting half down. Don’t tell them anything about how you’re paying until the negotiated price is finalized and you’re sitting in the finance office.
As far as getting a good deal, it’s tough now but some people are finding good deals. I would just blast out emails to as many dealerships as possible that are within your buying range and be patient.

I just picked up a Tacoma Off Road 4x4 DCSB in cement, black interior, premium offroad package, weather mates, bed mat, bed lights, maybe a few other odds and ends for 42,500. Not bad considering I’m in the Bay Area California.

This is the method that some of the other guys are talking about: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/so-you-want-to-buy-a-tacoma.475482/
I actually prefer to just make phone calls. Tell them exactly what you want. Then I tell them that i’m comparing prices right now but I’d be willing to put down a deposit on the phone right now if you could do it for (whatever your number would be ~10% off MSRP). This way they know you’re serious but reasonable and informed and you give them room to negotiate down to your real number(~8%). They will probably give you their best number. It seems like in this market a very good buy is around 8% off MSRP. If you can get them to email you the quote that’s good because you can use that to show other dealers where they need to be. Also, make sure that you get a complete breakdown of the out the door pricing in writing before putting down a deposit. If not, thank you for your time, keep me in mind. I’m definitely buying one from somebody. They’ll call back with a better price. By the end of the month, someone Will need a sale to hit a sales goal and will come down to that number or better.

The problem with making phone calls is you don’t have any written records. Documentation is always a good thing, especially if you’re paying a deposit. You want something in writing to show it was refundable, in case something happens and you end up not buying the truck.

Which dealership did you pick it up from? Most around here are charging a premium over MSRP.

I’m also in San Diego. We bought a 2021 TRD OR from Alexander Toyota in Yuma, we pick it up next week. We got $2500 off MSRP plus another 1K rebate. They will pay to smog and Vin verification in CAnand they collect all the taxes. Easy process! PM me if you want our salesman’s contact info. FYI we got it from another member on here that did the same thing.

Sticker price was $32k Price out the door was $2800 down payment plus a $1000 rebate and $273 a month. I felt like I got a great deal. I also purchased two cars though at the same time. You don't need to smog vehicles less than 4 years old to register them in CA. When I moved to CA a few years ago I shipped my 1 year old Acura from Hawaii and had no issue registering it at DMV without a smog certificate.

Not sure if I did the multi quote thing correctly.
I don’t see anything unsafe with it. It’s a Toyota dealership that I am contacting. Not some knock-off handbag company being run out of Ethiopia. If there’s a problem then there’s always Toyota customer service which seems to get things done as well as I put the deposit on my credit card so I could dispute it.

As far as in writing, yeah, of course like I said, I need everything in writing before putting down a deposit. Meaning they email me the price breakdown worksheet signed by a manager.
I used this technique when buying my wife’s Accord a couple months ago. I thought it was way easier and cut out a lot of the BS.

So are you saying the CA DMV's own website is wrong and that I was incorrectly allowed to register an out of state car without a smog certificate? Could you please link where it states a car never registered in CA needs a smog.

Wow, you’re sure a defensive one.
Not sure if it’s an official smog check but vin verification/emissions inspection.

Not really defensive, originally I was just trying to help. I simply stated you don't need a smog check on a new vehicle to register it in CA, along with a link to the DMV website with the info. You replied that new cars registered in CA do need a smog. All I was looking for was where you got your information from.

Guss_15 I am in SD too. I made a serious attempt back in late May/early June to buy a TRD Offroad 4x4 and at the time I had a few offers at $1k to 2k off MSRP. This is in North County San Diego. I am not in need of a new car and wasn't that eager to pay that much. I've been monitoring it and it doesn't seem to be much better now, maybe even worse. That is based on what I have been reading, not actual experience since I am on the sidelines.

The 2021 inventory seems to be coming in more heavily then the 2020s were so I might put out a few calls/emails.

One thing I do notice in using the Toyota.com inventory search is that Orange County and Riverside county consistently have more buying opions and inventory available. I might start stretching beyiond SD county if I start seeing prices coming down off MSRP. The packages I am looking at are all in the $44k to $46k MSRP range. Ideally I'd like to get that down to the $39 to $41k range.

Trying to get a TRD Offroad 4x4 DCLB with Premium Off-Road Package and the Technology Package. Would take the Advanced Tech package but not required.

I just contacted my dealer in Yuma and they said it depends on what county the truck is sold in which seems odd. Either way I will stop on the way back for the inspection so if I have to smog it that’s fine.

I am from San Diego as well and have been shopping for awhile now. Thank you to everyone who has been so helpful on this tread!! I did put a deposit on one via a local dealer; however, I purposely found one that would be built late Oct with a delivery date of early Nov in hopes of at least getting some factory money in Nov as there is none in Oct. I am going to try the Yuma route as Calikat’s deal is by far the best I have seen in the southwest region (congrats Btw). If I am forced to pay MSRP I am going to ask for a discount on parts. Prob the wrong forum (forgive me I am new) but I would like to purchase the Pro wheels and then put KM3’s on. Anyone know what tire size I would need with the Pro OEM wheels?

would you have to pay the tax in AZ and then when you register the car in CA, you pay again?

I am interested to understand more on how the tax work for purchasing car out of state (CA).

can you provide the break down on your price?
