    Hi guys,
I know there a thousands of posts on this topic. I’ve read a lot of them. Unfortunately I feel like I’ve gone fully down the rabbit hole on this and have hit a wall in my understanding. I’ve read about backspacing and offsets, max sizes possible on a stock suspension, weight, etc etc etc .. god.. etc..

My question for the hive is with regard to a 2020 TRD off-road. I want to get method rims with the bead grip (not bead lock), in matte bronze and I want them to stand 3/4-1” out so that they’re at least flush with the OEM fenders, if not slightly proud of them. I’d like to keep my existing rubber, Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain AT 265/70R16s. That said, I would also happily keep those installed on the stock rims and get new 17s and rubber all the way around.

The issue is obvious though, to all of us who’ve been down this road.. what works for wheels and rims without cutting to achieve that stance just slightly outside the fenders. Don’t want wheel spacers. Do want method rims. Want a solid KO2-ish or AT tire capable of highway driving and sand/mud/snow. Just can’t.. wrap.. the brain.. around all these dimensions.

Also the guys at the tire shops near here are next to worthless. They made some recommendations that I was able to look up an immediately found issues with regarding necessary trimming. Went back, got different options, same shit. Went to various tire shops and it’s Sisyphean.. there no clue in there. They call the manager.. we even dry fit options they had in stock and found rub points at full turn. I can’t trust them anymore. I want to. I just can’t.

So. Can you gents help me figure out what my options are? Should I just give up until I do my suspension mod next year? I’ll have 17s then or 17s now. So I don’t see a reason to wait. Suspension mod is an Icon 10 with billet UCA. 2.75” lift. Don’t need more than 17s or 275/70r17s KO2s even then.

    Please help me with this.

So the suspension with the wheels and tires. That’s how I did mine with SCS wheels, 285/70/17 BFG KO2 C rated. Zero cutting no rubbing (can’t have a front mud flap).

It all depends on the truck. I have 285/70/17s on my truck. It requires trimming a little plastic an a cab mount chop. Even off roading I still rub a little just depends. You will not be able to run front mud flaps FYI. I’m running SCS F5’s with 17x8.5 with 4.30” back spacing. But when I was stock I ran 265/70/17 Duratracs With out rubbing on TRD 4runner pro wheels.

Your wheel and tire set up is almost exactly what I’m going for. What are you running? Can you be more specific? Do you have stock suspension still?

    Thank you.

Below is a pic of Method 701s (17x8.5, 0 offset) on 265/70/17s. Gives you an idea of the poke.

Method 305 NV (0/4.5), 16X8, 265/75R16. Suspension is just under 2" over stock OR height, Fox 2.5 coilovers with 14"/650# springs up front, Icon RXT (set at Option 2) with Fox 2.0 resis out back.

I may be going with the Method 703 in the near future...they have the same offset and BS as the NV.

thanks for all the help. I have Method 703's in the garage waiting on the lift. Still in the 285/70/17 or 265/70/17 debate...it changes every day.

I bought my 2020 trd sport from the dealer with 285/70/17’s and a 2.5” lift. I thought I was having transmission problems for three months. Even had the 5000 mile check up and rotation and the mechanic didn’t notice the issue. Then one day I was washing the truck and realized the tires were rubbing on the UCA’s causing the strange sensation I was thinking was the transmission. We went down to 275/70/17 and it’s a whole new truck. 1000rpm more higher on the highway. Leaves from a stoplight much better. I think you’d need different gears to run 285’s. But my issue B was the XD wheel package- this has a +28 offset. Ugh! No bueno.

Look closely at the wheel offset on what ever wheels you consider. I think Methods are 0 or +18 depending. To get that look beyond the fender you’ll Probly need 0 to -X’s (not + X’s). I made that mistake and got XD wheels that are +28 and they rub everything from my UCAs to my girlfriend! Ugh. I think the Method sizes are all good but triple check on that. Also is the tire you choose. I had Terra Grappler 185/17 and their sidewall is rather round and bulging. I switched to KO2’s which have a more square shape in my opinion and experience and less likely to rub.

I dealt with what you're looking into now. Offset is the key. I initially ran 17x8.5 with 0 offset and 265/70/R17 Falken Wildpeaks. No issues at all. Had a 2 in Dobinsons lift. I upgraded to the heavy duty Dobinson setup and switched to the 285/70R17 Falkens. Tires were rubbing on my control arms and I was rubbing the fender well. Did some trimming and a CMC. Also replaced the wheels with some different Methods that had -12mm offset. All is well again.
