I think it's a littke of both. Politics are just another device for creating in-grouos and out-groups, a sociological phenomenon spurred by belief of moral superiorority, perceiving another group as a threat, or political change. Since early evolution, humans have naturally placed people, animals, objects into grouos; it's what we do, and it originated as a survival machanism. You can look up in the dark from your paleolithic campfire and see a two legged figure moving in the dark and you recognize it as your in-group, human, not an out-group of a predator. Your adrenaline does not need to be released by the hypothalamus and your fight or flight instincts don't kick in, conserving energy fueled by precious calories. As we evolved and became safe from predators, we still have the natural inclination for grouping and forming in-groups and out-groups, only nowadays the survival is more social in nature. No longer is our ability to feed ourselves governed by our ability to hunt and fend off predators; we must now assimilate within social settings to gain employment, to procreate, to feed and educate ourselves. As the world becomse increasingly complex, we perceive more and more change, wider and more diverse social environments and potential threats. Worries now include disease, war, famine, terrorist attack, being murdered for cutting off the wrong person in traffic, or being ostracized as a pariah for not completely understanding an evolving concept of human gender identity and saying the wrong thing. Depending on where, how, and by whom you were reared, a person may experience any combination of these fears and any of millions of others. In the end, we're all trying to look out for our own survival, our own families, our own in-grouos with whom we've bonded for protection. Many things may be perceived as threats to these bonds, resulting in an age-old evolutionary relic engaging that fight or flight mechanism, that adrenaline, in defense of a perceived attack however tame. Ever read something online, some article about cruelty or human stupidity and you can feel yourself getting angry, maybe you thought "Some people should get beat/shot" and you can actually feel a little bit of a tingle in your chest, maybe behind your cheeks? That is the reaction you're experiencinflg, similar to many others. So remember 'people being stupid/rude/assholes' may well be an easy enough brush to cover the whole canvas, but that's too broad and a little disingenuous. Sure some lapses in education may have contributed, but your fellow human being may be feeling elements of fear from something you did not realize they would perceive, at some level, as an attack.

Tl;dr - Be excellent to each other, and remember the human being on the other side of the screen.

or what is considered a "political" discussion really isnt one.

anyone up to discuss the lack of high speed rail infrastructure in this nation and our crumbling road and highway system?
