For you guys "proactively" replacing your original batteries, those batteries often go 10+ years without issues. Your replacement will probably need replaced again before that original battery would have bit the dust. If you are that concerned about being stranded, spend $50 and buy one of those small portable chargers and throw it in your glovebox.

Is there a stamp or something on the OEM batteries which shows the date? I think my 2012 may still have the original battery.

Ugh both my batteries on two different new Tacomas bit the dust at approximately 4 years. I don't know where you get 10 years? Most batteries last 4-5 years in my experience with the tacoma batteries being pretty crappy to begin with.

It should have a sticker that reads "Distributed by Toyota Motors Corp." If it has a TrueStart sticker, it's a replacement.

The battery in my 2006 Tacoma needed replaced only after it sat in the dealers lot waiting for a frame replacement for months, that was a couple years ago, so I got about 12 years out of that one. My 2014 4Runner, that I bought in 2013, still has the OEM battery. OEM battery in my 2001 4Runner was more than 10 years old when I replaced it. Same thing as my truck, it died after it was sitting for a few months. Unless something has changed, these batteries were manufactured by Panasonic and you can't buy them here. When the OEM died in my Tacoma, I researched replacements after the TrueStart only survived a year before needing replaced.

That is amazing. Battery life expectancy does vary a lot and highly depends on usage and climate. Hotter temperature areas you are lucky to get 4 years. Ohio seems to have low average temps. But I've never been there.

I change mine when it dies. I carry around a small jump starter. Actually had to just replace my OEM battery two weeks ago and that was just shy of 4 years.

The brine they use on our roads quickly converts frames to swiss cheese, but at least the low temps don't kill our batteries so fast, lol. I think I'll trade! After replacing my rusted transmission lines yesterday, putting my '77 FJ40 away for the winter, and ordering more Woolwax to undercoat my vehicles, I keep asking myself why I haven't moved yet. The brine really is a killer, MUCH more corrosive than just road salt :(

Then I guess I got REALLY lucky on my last 3 batteries. Well, not sure about the 4Runner battery making it to ten, in a month it will have made it 7 years.

Anyway, my point was not to be "proactive" when it comes to the original Panasonic battery. Carry some jumper cables or buy a small charger if you are really concerned about getting stranded and keep that battery until it quits ;)

Car batteries tend to die at the most inopportune time. Buying a new battery seems pretty cheap compared to trying to milk every last ouch of juice from it. $100 from Costco or Sams every 3-5 years sounds reasonable for peace of mind.

I'd bet you could walk into a NAPA and walk out with a new tie down set.

Living in a harsh winter environment....I'd definitely keep the battery with the 840CCA. I'd also figure out a way to get it anchored, be it from dealer parts from another model or make my own.

Seems like the new batt fits the tray, just a problem with the tie down. You only need a simple solution.

For the mechanically challenged (those that think only inside the box), Home Depot (big "box" store) has some long and very thick wire ties. Just strap it to the tray with three or four.:crapstorm:
